When was 3D-Secure required from PlayOnline? Last time I played (which was roughly three years ago) I was playing on dial-up. Will this game still run on dial-up? Yes I said dial-up for those of you laughing. I just use the internet for casual surfing and ff11 ran well for me on dial-up. When the new Final Fantasy onling game comes out, do you think the population of ff11 will decrease a lot?

Ok, so after this update I'm going to redo this sticky with all the new stuff.

It's gonna be a massive update, so if anyone has any other questions that they want included, post them after this.

Keep in mind I'll be including:

- Add-on info
- VbV/SC info
- Trial account info
- Ultimate pack info

What a helpful post! I am thinking of returning to FFXI. I quit 7 months after ToAU came out. I didn't want to start all over but it seems that starting over would not be so bad. I've been missing the game a lot recently. I've been burnt out from WoW and I need a filler until FFXIV comes out! Your post was the deal maker lol Thank You!

thanks for the info, I just reactivated my account, a bit bored from wow and aion and just sorta waiting around for ffxiv now just deciding on what server to play, I have my old acct with my 75s but I kind of want to start from scratch

I've been feeling the urge to play again recently too, especially since the inception of features such as LevelSync and the FoVs. I was still playing when LevelSync was introduced, and I was hugely impressed with it. I just couldn't afford to keep playing at the time. Now I can come back, just have to replace a few things on my computer first.

I think things have been improving for the better the whole time, and I can't wait for FF XIV.

Everything that was writing down on why goin back to Final Fantasy XI is misleading by a fan of Final Fantasy XI but the true is that i wouldnt recomend any mmo player to start playing Final Fantasy XI or even try to come back to it. the True is this

Is it too late to join?

The lie
(No, it's never too late. As with most MMOs, there will be a population that is already much higher in level than you. Unlike most MMOs, this doesn't matter nearly as much, as you cannot be killed by fellow players. This allows you to catch up to those already at the level cap without detriment. )

The true
The leveling system on this game is 1 of the most time-consuming that any mmo has, to level up require a group of 6 members tank healer 3 DD or dps and 1 suport job, if you may ask whats a suport job is a class that increases others classes performence. If you are new in the game and dont have any friends you gona have a few problems

1)it could take you from 30min to a few Hrs to find a group to lvl up

2)on this game you have a sub job wich is where you combine the ability of your main job with a nother like warrior/ninja but to be able to do this you need to collect some items frome monsters that cant be done alone wich mean you would have to go around beging for some 1 to help you since finding help in this game aint easy

3)Do the fact that you dont have a sub job until lvl 18 most player will be discouraged to invite you to a group making it longer for you to find a party to lvl up.

4)There a lvl cap onces you hit that cap you require to pick some items frome a quest that will give you acces to lvl up once again, good luck finding a hand this could take you a few hrs or days to do and you have to do this quest 3 different times.

5)To get acces to some location in the game so you can lvl up require for you todo some quest that will give you the acces to does lvling spot or what the games calls camping spot. again this will require helps frome other players ...more beging to do.

if you the type of player that only plays for 3-5hr a day it could take you 4 to 6 months to be able to hit 75 wich the max lvl. In other mmo the most time you would spend lvling up would be 1 to 2 months to hit the max lvl

How is the economy?

While it does vary from server to server, overall the economy has deflated a lot from the heights it reached. With the aggressive actions of the Special Task Force, gilsellers have been banned in huge amounts. And while they still exist, they do not exist to the degree that they did.

The reality!
Final Fantasy XI has the worst economy in any mmo actually more like its the only mmo with bad economy and is the main reason this game losses players to others mmo.
A new player that plays 3-5hr a day will spend 2-3 days farming gold for about every 10-15 lvl you hit so you could upgrade you armor. this makes players end up doing two thing

1) they quit the game
2) they like the game so much that they buy gold for reall $ so they can keep playing

Is Final Fantasy XI dying?

Short answer: No.

reality!!
yes the game is slowly coming to its end.
reason why? the game every years loses numbers of player little by little to the point where square enix will be spending money to keep the game up instead of making money this is why they are making a new mmo instead of adding a new expansion they are gona try all over again since ffxi is not meeting there expectation. If you read on the new ff mmo they are actually makig it similar to other mmo when it comes down to being time-consuming.

The only people who are still playing ffxi are 2 types.

1)the onces that spend so much time in the game and gotten so far that they just cant drop all that hard work. this group of ppl will quit the game onces the new ff mmo comes out.

2)Hardcore player, ffxi is the only mmo game that you are able to stand out frome other player. There are gears on this game that takes so many years to get wich only hardcore player are able to get. carrying this gears would make you a godly player to the point where your name would be know to every 1 on that server. This type of player wont quit until the game is shutdown

I played ffxi for roughly 3 years march 2005 till nov 2007. I didnt pay much attention towards the end of the game. I was a 75sam with most of the other jobs at 37. I joined alot of linkshells to try and do dynamis and the AOU missions.

Game got quite boring.

After i had left they introduced levelsync which i thought was alot of rubbish because the main aspect of levelling in FFXI is to have a well balanced party that will at least spend 8 hours in the one area advancing 4-5 levels if you are lucky. Hearing that it is possible to solo to 75 makes me want to join again instantly. End game has also been made more interesting with mythic weapons and campaign (solo stuff). And not to forget the latest expansion wings of the godess with the 2 play on scenarios.

Personally im going to start back up possibly early next year.

But i do reccomend anyone who quit during or before the ToAU expansion for any reason such as LFG for hours, or end game boredom or drama within an endgame LS. Im assuming that the game has changed alot due to the solo add ons.

I have considered returning for a while, but I am not sure about doing it. My biggest concern is my Char is currently on a low pop euro server, and I am in the middle of the USA. My linkshell fell apart, and Partying became near impossible with everyone playing in a completely different time zone. So I guess I am wondering if anyone in the USA has a good server and linkshell I could join? My best job is a 52 whm. I don't get on the forums often, so if you could email me with info about servers/linkshells i'd appreciate it. Michael_Gallucci@hotmail.com

Be there trolls in this here thread??? Best not feed them, I suppose...

Returning player here. Started in early 2005, been on-again off-again ever since.

Testimony of someone who has never had a character above level 40, and just started fresh with a new account and a new server:

1 - Is it too late to join?

I haven't had any problem whatsoever finding parties. Maybe I've been getting lucky, but I've only been back for 3 days and I've already got one job up to 19 and another up to 15. This game is still very playable and there are still a good number of active people. My advice to make your FFXI life much easier - look for a good linkshell! You're going to want a friendly social LS to start. Example: GreatBigSea of CaitSith. I joined CaitSith exclusively because this LS seemed to be helpful and friendly, and I don't regret my decision =) Also, you can ask around when you get in the game after you've picked your server. Though there are exceptions, most of the playerbase are very friendly and helpful, and probably know good social linkshells to recommend. The server forums here are a good place to inquire about linkshells that are accepting new players.

You will NOT enjoy this game if you do not attempt to reach out to others and network yourself. This includes joining linkshells, making friends through parties, helping others (believe me, those newbies grow up fast, and they'll remember all the nice things you did for them), and being involved.

2 - How does this game differ from <insert name of MMO here>

Community. Intricate story arcs. Focus on PvE. The absolute necessity for you to socialize - if you don't, you aren't going to get very far.

...

8 - Is FFXI dying?

Servers still have a healthy population, as far as I can tell, and you can expect that on each server there will be anywhere from 1.8k to 2.5k people online at any given time. With FFXIV coming out, it seems like some endgame 75s have left, but in my opinion this has little bearing on anyone who is coming into the game as a new or returning player. Those 75s that are awaiting the FFXIV were probably only doing endgame content anyway, it's not like you would have ran across them in Valkurm Dunes.

I've seen new people every day so far, and that's on CaitSith alone. As long as new players continue to come into the game, it won't be dying. Even after FFXIV comes out, there will still be people who play this game, much like after EQ2 came out there were still people who only played EQ.

So, if you've tried the game out, and you like it, don't let these things worry you. There's enough content here to keep you busy (and enjoying it) for a long time, and plenty of players around to enjoy it with. As it has been pointed out here already, this game isn't for everyone. If you like being a lone wolf, this game will be off-putting. If you dislike working in teams or helping others, this game will be frustrating for you.

And if you decided to join CaitSith, feel free to drop me a line. I am more than happy to help.

I just returned and I'm having an absolute blast so far. Only problem is, wife and I started new accounts, as we'd lost the info for our old ones (found it later and reactivated). We have yet to see anyone speak in any sort of chat form, we also have no LS pearls and are not sure as to the best way to join a LS. With absolute silence in the world, it's a bit strange. Once we find a LS, I'm sure that'll change though. Haven't found any parties yet, but I've been level syncing my old account with the new ones and we're pretty much forming our own party now!

Had some trouble getting my credit card through, as it isn't Verified by Visa, but luckily I have a copy of FFXI on my PS2 and found out through researching this forum that it goes through no problem there.

Mkay, i guess i posted in the wrong area, thanks Mielu for pointing that out. Well as i stated i played ff11 after its launch in the u.s for two years after it. I quit because of schooling and financial issues, but now i am returning and i have read over this post, apparently alot has happened and i really don't understand some of what i read. I'm hoping to get some friends on here before i start the game, i would love to play alongside some fun people. So let me know some servers you guys and girls play on,
see ya in-game!!

What server are you on? Go to your server's forum here and say that you're looking for a linkshell. If you're on Caitsith, I can give you a pearl to GreatBigSea, but otherwise you should post on your server's board and ask about a good social LS.

Anyone having any luck getting a new account started? I've been trying for a few days, to no avail. The customer service guy told me that it usually slacks off mid-month, because the games so popular. I find it hard to believe that the server is so jammed on a game that came out years ago by new players. What's up with this?

I doubt anyone else here has tried making an account recently. Good luck finding any of the 0-3 other people that have made/tried to make an account the last few days. That's just how much an idiot that CS rep is.

Stopped playing about 2 years ago, but all this talk about FFXIV has got me so friggin' giddy I had to reactivate my FFXI account to pass the time. I quit into the 50's doing Samurai iirc. I don't remember what server I was on, but I'll find out after I'm done doing the update. 2 hours left, ugh... Anyway, I pretty much know NO ONE right now so if I could find a helpful linkshell to be nice and show me the ropes again, that's be awesome. I'll post what server I'm on when I can.

Hi,

I just bought the game for my pc (2008 Ed), its in the post. I just wanted to confirm a few things really. Is it really worth me starting this late on into the life of the game? I heard it can take A LOT of your time up and I don't have tons of free time. If you do think it is worth the efort, Where is a good place to start for beginners? I'm in the UK so where do you think it is best that I start?

Thanks.

Hi all. I'm a former player.

I used to live on Seraph. One of the major reasons I left FFXI was the sheer lack of events within European time zones (low social opportunities, always had to stay up late to do endgame, which I just cannot do these days.)

I still like FFXI. That means I've seen the upcoming raft of updates, increasing level cap, job changes, server mergers, and I'm torn. Part of me wants to return, find a different, more timezone friendly server, try a more casual FFXI. But then I think about the graphics and interface, the grind game play and, in all honesty, the cost per month.

My question is: Is FFXI worth it, considering the type of gamer I've become? (early euro, casual, poor) Just looking for opinions from those still within the game and perhaps those in similar situations who may have succeeded where I didn't on Seraph.

I took a 2 year break from the game but i didnt delete my character i just canceled the payment on the account does that still count as deleting my character? or can i just start paying again and i can have everything that i had before?

P.S Ty for the post i had a bunch of questions about whats new about the game and you answered everything. ^_^

You should be fine. I also took a 2 year hiatus (without actually deleting any characters) and just reactivated my account last week with almost no problems. I say "almost" because the password I'd written down in my instruction manual was old. I never wrote the new one down after changing it. Oops.

If you don't remember your POL ID or pw, call up SE Support (858.790.7529). I'm pretty sure they can dig up your original POL ID if you can provide them with the info on the account. If you have your POL ID but forgot your password, I'm positive they'll reset the password because that's what they did for me. Info you need to have on hand:

Address you gave them at the time of original registration
Phone# you gave them at the time of original registration
CC used to activate your original acct
Registration Key (although they never asked for mine, they may ask for yours if you don't remember your POL ID)

Good luck :D

I just wanted to say that I read the retuning sticky and thought it was excellent. I played back in 2006 (never got past level 60 because of all of the “side” things to do in the game) I have some specific questions on returning.

1. How is the economy? I left at about the peak of inflation I think. I know it will very by server but can anyone give me an idea of what a stack of fire crystals currently goes for and what darksteel ore currently goes for? This will give me an idea about the economy

2. I will be starting from scratch. I read about all of the experience/leveling changes. I am more of a casual gamer now though although I will still have time to do some 5-6 hour marathon partying sessions. My question is about how many game hours do you estimate it would take to level a starting job to 30 with most of that time spent soloing?

3. Has there been any recent changes/additions to crafting?

4. any servers to possibly avoid? My primary play time would be afternoons and evenings in North America East coast. I know there was a recent merger.

Just trying to figure out if it is personally worth returning for me. Answers to these specific questions would be very helpful in making my decision

Great guide. I played from shortly after the NA release to a few months after ToAU came out. I started playing again a week ago because the "Ultimate Collection" was on sale and I was overcome by nostalgia. =) I started a new character because I can't remember my old POL ID and apparently I don't have enough info to get it back (that I was supposed to catalog my CD key and old credit card # for seven years is beyond my understanding).

Having fun with it so far. The field manuals make it a little easier to start out exp- and money-wise. I'm just worried that missions, the sub-job quest, limit breaks, and so forth will be even more of a pain than they were. I'm also sad that I haven't seen a single person I recognize (no friends, not even strangers whose names ring a bell), even in Jeuno.

Can't wait to try out Dancer and Scholar; both look like loads of fun.

My god i hate WoW. I am ready to come back, for the 3rd time. I have decided to forgive SE/POL's payment system for this game. I miss my MNK/WAR, BLU/NIN and NIN/DNC. Unfortunately I have a feeling my old LS will be dead, but that wont stop me from enjoying my favorite MMO.

EDIT: I've just found out that Hades was put down.. This puts a damper on my enthusiasm.

So I got this game for the first time in March during the Steam sale on the UC, and this is an awesome MMO I have to say.

I'm in the Alexander server and right now my leveled jobs are: RDM 51, NIN 26, DNC 25, WHM 18, THF 15 and WAR 05.

I got into an LS in the first week I joined but sadly they seem to have died recently but I was able to join another one. And I don't think you can effectovly play FFXI without an LS anyways. ;)

Hey a somewhat returning player here. I was wondering. Do the add-ons stay connect through accounts via systems as I have ffxi for both PC and PS3. I was thinking since my pc lacks the wing of goddess expansion and i'm mising the shanntotto add on I could just buy the ultimate pack from steam.

EDIT -Actually nevermind. not sure if i'll get a response right away so ignore this question.-

Thank you for the post! It's been two years since I left FFXI and I've really been missing it and thinking of rejoining. I already have my Playone account active, so I know I can get my character back. Your post really helped alot in answering quesions I had.

Well after a year long leave, I have returned for the up and coming winter months plus MW2 is starting to get boring. I'm currently stuck on a 55 DRK. I would really like to max it out, but just like last year there were never enough people at my level to party up with. I miss the glory days of this game back in 2003-2004 before WoW took over the MMO community.

It is really too bad that, in watching the live feed, one might see a possible player kneeling in such a spot they might know will become broadcast. I remember a time when every second area on the live cam had a 6-person, or lone wolf party fighting outside the caves and towns. No, like Pawkeshup said, this game with never never be like WoW; which is still strong and active and full of nuances and in-game occurances that I've never experienced during my EverCrack days. It could be all my initial excitement over this game has fizzled--yet this might be rekindled upon release of 14. . . IF one can choose "good guys or bad guys" if not, I'm out. (Going to play WoW instead.)

Thank you for that amazing post! I just came back to FFXI after 5 years and its soo different. When I saw scorpion harness as 30k, i almost cried in joy.

The thing i was most surprised about is your statement on how someone can solo from 1-75 using Field Manuals??? Thats not true, is it? Im sure you can get alot more XP then before through that, but solo to 75? With any job?

Sorry for asking a noob question...Ive been out of the game for too long

Hello Everyone,

Let me start off by saying this is a great post. I much like others in this thread have recently been contemplating a return to FF (have been playing the FFXIV beta and my interest has been piqued). I see a lot of questions being asked but not many answers, unfortunately I just have more questions to add.

My wife and I have been playing WoW for the past 5 years, prior to that a friend and I played FFXI for about 6 months. Both of us gave up the game around level 30 as the time it took to find a party to quest or level seemed very unreasonable, although in hind sight im not surprised as we were a MNK and a RDM, not exactly the most needed classes. Although after reading all of the changes listed we are just about ready to give it a shot.

My questions are pretty simple I think however I cant seem to find any specific answers. When you die do you still lose XP and levels? I see it is mentioned that the amount of XP lost was lessened but do you still level down if you die too much? When you level up do you have to manually allocate skill points and thus possibly risk gimping yourself by stacking points in the wrong categories or spreading the points too thin across all categories? If we play in all likelyhood it will for the most part be just the 2 of us as a static team, we have a new baby and do not have the time for many multi hour sessions thus we will be pretty casual, is it possible to level/quest for the majority of the time in a small group like this?

Thank you for your consideration, if their are any other husband/wife teams out there who started recently I would greatly appreciate any input you have on your experience so far. I should add that if in reading this you think this wont be the game for us then by all means let me know. As I said we would likely be playing 2-3 times a week in maybe 2 hour sessions. Would appreciate some honest opinions.

It's been more than 4 or 5 years since I last played FF11, and I'm now getting back to it (game is still patching as I type this... they need to work on that). I see a HUGE amount of changes which is a big plus for me. I never really did much with the game after get up to level 30 or so other than switch races and jobs during the 1-2 years I did play the game.

Hoping things are awesome with the massive changes they've made over the years... and to get my MMO jive going again with FF14 on the horizon.
