Oceanic server not oceanic server?Follow

I've just popped over to the oceanic server after playing on US Alsbeth for the past month or 2.

My ping is exactly the same (200ms) which raises the question, is the oceanic server not oceania based? and if so why not?

I'm a NZ player and 200ms makes a BIG impact in the end game raids, we've started GSB now and once you combine the ping with the sheer intensiveness of the graphics, its starting to show in my healing, 1.5second gcd's etc don't make for a solid healer.

So back to the original request, Shard Laethys, states it is oceanic. Is it actually based in oceania? If not, why?

And also if not, will you be creating an actual oceanic server and again if not, why?

Hi there! From the line I've quoted above I think you've mistaken us for Trion. We're ZAM.com, a gaming database, guides, and news site :) You might have a better chance of an answer over at the official rift forums. http://forums.riftgame.com/

Nah, I think I'll leave it as proof I'm not the only person flaky before coffee.

2 reasons:
Oceana based.. How do you mean? In the Phillipines, Korea, Japan, China, Cambodia? Where should the server be? It is not exactly like you run some lines to a shack and set-up servers and there you have it.

You actually have to set-up a building...hire people...coordinate the networks. The Australian audience is not big enough to warrant this. The obvious question is why not set-up one because the Chinese and Japan audience is massive and that does warrant it.

This is true, but to have the game and say China audience in it...good bye death concept in the game..Go look at WoW if you want to see what they had to do there.

When any company labels a game Oceanic based they are referring to maintenance times that work for you specifically and cater to Australians.

I was just looking at the shard list, and I don't see any marked for any particular region. Languages, yes, regions, no. Laethys is designated PvE-RP (English). http://rift.zam.com/wiki/Shards%20%28Rift%29

Dayblind and Laethys are the Oceanic servers now purely labeled that way because of the maintenance times. You have to dig for the thread, but a GM made one basically saying this.

It will take me a awhile to find, but that is where all the Oceanic people are.

Edit:

Oceanic Recommended Shards - Laethys (PvE) [Dayblind now closed to transfers]

Greetings!

Oceanic players will now see two suggested shards (Dayblind & Laethys) when transferring your characters. These shards are hosted in the North America datacenter and already have active Oceanic populations that will likely provide you with the best experience in your search for a new community. They will continue to share the same maintenance times which we already schedule to avoid impacting your play time as little as possible.

North American players already on these shards will not be impacted in any way.

We want to thank those of you who have already taken the initiative to guide other Oceanic players to these shards and hope these suggestions make it easier for everyone to find the community that is best for them – have fun!

Yeah, the fact is, all the servers are actually in the same place. They're in Trion's data center, wherever Trion is located (probably California, though there might be another European data center too).

When companies like this label servers for a particular region, what they usually mean is that the server's clock is set to a particular time zone and the server's population is from a particular time zone, and probably speaks a particular language.

As Puremallace said above, there is no server physically located in Australia, China, Korea, or Japan because there's no data center in any of those places and setting one up specifically to host these two servers would be a colossal waste of resources.
