The population is good - if you haven't played in 6 years saying alot has changed is a bit of an understatement. 6 man parties are gone. Now everyone levels in alliances. You will solo til about 13-14, then go to Gusgen mines and do the Bones Grounds of Valor page with whoever is there. Stay there until around 36 ish, then head on over to the Crawlers nest where you will do the crawler and bee page. You can stay there until 75 at which point you move to Abyssea (a tip, once you hit level 30 look up how to open Abyssea so that while you are leveling you are building up stones which is kind of the 'currency' needed to enter). Either that or at around 65ish do Bostaunieux Oubliette until 75-80. I don;t see many people there though, but it's worth it to check out when you hit that level range because skillups in the nest will only go to about 150 and that will suck in abyssea.

then it's abyssea until 99.

If you are joining this linkshell, any of us can help you with the information you need to get your bearings. It may sound like a lot, but it's easier than it looks. There is a guy who put together a whole abyssea guide that's like a 200 pages monstrosity - I'll link it here. It will help you a lot as far as the stuff you will need to know.

You can wait until you hit level 30 but to be honest they are bundling it with the rest of the xpacs now and you can get the whole shebang on steam for like 10 bucks. If you are a 360 player I think they did put together an abyssea collectors edition for that too but it might be harder to get hold of new. But what you can do is just buy a cheap used copy for the installation of the base xpacs, and then buy the steam copy for the game codes. The game codes will work on all three platforms so it doesn't matter that its for PC. If you can pick up a copy of the older collectors edition used for cheap, then go that route because it will just download the Abyssea sh*t anyway.

Just make sure that once you hit 30 you unlock it so that its building your stones while you do other sh*t in the game and it will be ready for you to jump right in when the time comes.

If it's easier to find then go for it. I'll be honest though - the Xbox is laggy as hell in these 18 man events and unless I'm just noodling around solo, I boot up the laptop every time. Graphics are better and the wireless rumblepad is a good substitute for a 360 controller.

The only thing I would say about ordering them through POL is that you will get ripped off. they will be 10 bucks a piece if you do it that way, so I still recommend going through steam and getting ALL of the xpacs, moogle add ons, and abyssea add ons for 10 bucks total. You might end up with more codes than you need, but it will be less expensive and I think there is still a cool item you get with the collector pack (a reraise hat i think).

Folks kind of do it just for completions' sake now. AF was always mostly useless except for a handful of jobs and some situational pieces, so even 6 years ago I can only remember macroing in a piece or two across all my jobs. I mean, if you are planning on leveling Red Mage by all means still get the hat etc. but as far as whether or not to stop your entire gaming experience just for AF in 2012 FFXI - not really necessary. If you enjoy the quests, do them, and we've helped with key farming and sh*t before so that's not a problem, but don't feel like you HAVE to or you will be some kind of gimp.

You will level so fast that you no longer need to stop to 'farm' or whatever for specific pieces of equipment anymore (i.e. beehive chips because you can't level without that hauby!). Then you will start to earn the Abyssea pieces which trump most of even the old 75 cap end game gear. The requirements are a lot more lax now until you start thinking about level cap stuff.

I'll still grab the steam version $20 isn't to bad. I may see what the price of the xbox collecter is at best buy I may get both. Useing the xbox for soloing and craftting. And I used to main PLD/WAR so my AF was pretty important since I could ride the AF till 70 roughly. But I always enjoyed the missions and interaction with the LS hunting down keys and coffers.

Well I'm starting new and was going to start off as whm and maybe to a bst a bit later on.


ps. well just got home and i'm downloading it right now download says 2 hours my guess is patching will take the longest.

Its been so long since i played last i remember the cap was at 75 and now im hearing its 99?! this is madness!!! lol jk im excited to start playing again im downloading that super mega long update lucky me im interested in joining the linkshell i prolly might be on tonight my name is Bigpopparick of course so if you see me walking around looking lost dont laugh too much haha see yall soon.
