Personally this was one I asked myself a few days ago when I learned about the game. With the closed beta date of December 3rd coming up quickly how do I get a beta key? Well at first I was pointed in the direction of gamespot's site where all I had to do was log in to my account then click for a key. Soon after I learned that it was just a community key, so heres a brief explanation of the two.

Community Keys

They typically have (community name)_Beta_Key when you register them on your account. These keys give you a CHANCE to get accepted into 1 of the 3 beta phases. You could get very lucky and be accepted to all 3, but the odds are stacked against you. Also just because you get accepted to 1 of the betas doesn't mean you are included in the other two as well. The drawings are completely random. Unless you have a VIP key.

VIP Keys

I don't have one personally and am hoping to get one. These give you guaranteed access to all of the closed betas and content testing the game will have before release. This key looks something like the community key, however it will have _VIP in the name as well. These keys are given away daily on Twitter and Facebook by the game's staff as well as on various sites such as this one. They are in high demand however and you must be quick if you want to get one.

If you have already put a community key onto your account and get a hold of a VIP one you don't need to make a new account. Just register the code on the same account and it will override the community key.

I too am hoping for a VIP key. I am incredibly busy the weekend of the first beta event and it'll be my luck that I get into that one and no others. Thank you ZAM for giving us the opportunity to win some VIP keys here.

Vip keys are awesome.

Seriously though. It surprised me to see the amount of marketing the game is getting throught facebook and other community related sites. It opens a new way of reaching players, especially using the new MSN feature, that includes facebook updates.

At least that's how I'm keeping up with the news.

Well Viral Marketing is very powerful if done right. Look at things like the Blair Witch Project or I read the new Harry Potter Theme Park in Universal Studios Florida posted the information on 7 fan sites and overnight like 700 million people knew about it. 24 hours is all it took for most people to hear about it lol.

I have seen this game all over the place which means that they are most likely doing it right. Plus the clamoring for beta keys will keep us all coming back.

Viral Marketing and using the technology at hand is the best way to advertise for anything now adays. Lets face it in a time where if someone likes something they post it in face book, and then all their friends see it and those who like it post it too and spread it. Thus the technology itself creates viral marketing without the companies having to do too much. So the amount of regular marketing this company has been doing for this game all over and with promotions like this which causes us to spread it even further it is no wonder that it has gone viral.

Honestly they were smart to advertise so heavily via Twitter and Facebook. I mean I was on this forum right when it came up, I ran across it while googling for VIP key type sites and this was at the top so I hopped on it. Hardly anyone had even posted on here I had the first few posts. Then they put the information about it on their Twitter and Facebook pages and now look at it.

I got to admit I would not be here if it was not for the Facebook post.
I admit I want the VIP pass but I do not need it. I came here to meet the dev team, and meet the community.
I think the marketing will be helping people meet those they will be testing with. I personally find testing much more enjoyable when I have people in the game I can play with and enjoy the game. That is the point of MMOs after all.

I completely agree with you Coreen.

It is great to see how much Rift has been marketing itself through fansites and other media sites such as this one as the beta approaches. For the longest time my guild has been watching Rift and asking ourselves why it wasn't getting very much attention for how impressed members of the media have been with it.

It's good to see, and makes me that much more excited for the release to finally get my hands on it and becoming a member of my server community.

Same here. I'm very impressed with their robust "grass roots" marketing. It's amazing I watched the game grow from myself telling all my guild mates about this game which has great potential and everyone asking "What is that?" to 500 beta keys disappearing instantaneously

A beta VIP key would be amazing, but 2011 isn't too far away. And this game definitely seems worth the wait. Until D3 releases anyway :P

I have a question about keys I haven't seen addressed as of yet. There are places people are getting more than one beta keys from (not the VIP key). So, let's say through all your sources you manage to get 6 keys and add them to your account. Now they are all just sitting there, looking all pretty and stuff :) They said they would invite from the community keys in stages, trying to take some out and replace them with others so more will have a chance to get in the beta. Let's say you get in the beta the first go around.....are the other 5 keys that were on your account no good now? Or just the one that got you into the beta? Is there s hierarchy of beta keys, like 1. VIP 2. PAX 3. First set of community keys 4. Second set of Community keys 5. Keys won in key give-a-ways on sites, 6. Keys just received in email from Trion for receiving their newsletter? Just wonderin' lol

It doesn't matter how many regular keys u enter, they don't improve ur chances of getting into the beta events, but if u got a VIP into ur hands and enter it, it overrides the regular ones.

Also keys are divided only into 2 categories VIP and Regular so all those community, give-away etc are regular ones :D

I understand all that about the VIP is all access, what I was asking is, if you got selected, were the rest of the keys a person enters, no good? Because they said they would put people in, like in stages. So, if a person got one of their keys selected, would that void the remaining 5 on their account. But if this is truly a "random" drawing of keys... then i would think a person with 10 keys would have a better chance than a person with 1 key. If there were 1000 keys totally one would have a 10 in 1000 chance the other a 1 in 1000 chance. I would also think somehow that the PAX keys would carry a bit more weight than a community key, just as the 1st wave of community keys have more weight over the 2nd wave of community keys. Anyways, was just thinking out loud, lol

Thanks for the info mate, as of now I only have one of Gamespot's community keys applied to my account so I'm realy hoping to get my hands on one of the VIP keys.
I've been following this game for quite a while now and I can't wait to try it out so I'm very thankful to Zam for giving us a chance to get a hold of a VIP key.

And yes, I too was very surprised about the amount of marketing this game got. To me it looked like just another one of those free to play mmo's, but when I started to learn about it all and did some research on the game I started to get very interested in it.
What especially caught my eye was, ofcourse, the unigue class customization feature, that is realy something I haven't seen before in any of the mmo's that I have played so far (which are alot).
It realy looks and sounds awesome in theory, so I can't wait to try it out and see if it realy is that great. Though I'm pretty sure it will.

Well because they said on the official Rift website that adding more than 1 community key does not enhance your chance of getting chosen for the beta, I think that they'll choose between all the accounts that have a community key applied to it instead of choosing from all the keys that have been used. This way an account that has multiple keys applied to it wont have a greater chance if getting picked than an account that has only one key applied to it.

And I'm sure this game like most others do allow you to pass along your "extra" community keys to friends and such...

Honestly key hoarding has been a strategy for this game for some people. I've seen guilds have all of their members get 1 key each from 3 different sites. If there are a hundred members in the gulid and they all use 3 keys there's 300 keys used and 200 less potential people for them to compete with. It's shady but it's happening right now, and a lot of people will be left out of beta because of this.

I'm hoping for a VIP key like so many others but I've only one Community Key from Gamespot. Although I've been a long time user of Allahkazam since back in EQ days. I actually logged into my old account and seen where I had posted info on fights and SS of many of the dragons. lol Good Memories.

I spent hours trying to get this question answered, wish I had started here. The OP explains it well in just a few lines.

And gotta love Allakhazam's, was the only source of info back in the old EQ days, after all, he was an EQ player and that was his character's name. Amazing how the network of sites has grown from one person's love of one game.

i was interested about the marketing aspect of this thread and i believe marketing for this game needs to be extremely high. with cataclysm having just dropped, and more well established titles like GW2 and SWTOR commin out in 2011 i say get an edge any way you can. most of my friends heard about it through my f book posts on their website. its like digital word of mouth, and can be very powerful indeed.
