I for one am extremely excited for a change. Being able to customize your character the way you want will be great. I've been playing mmos for the last 12 years, and a change from the generic World of Warcraft clone will be awesome, although Wow is good, change is sometimes better:)

My first character will probably be a rogue/bard, maybe ranger, but I don't know how ranged will hold up.

Now, what character are you most excited about making once beta goes live?

beastmaster, void knight for warrior and warden, shaman for cleric. i dont know why but the healers and warriors in this game have gotten me really excited, i only play tanks, healers and have found the most recent games have been boring in those aspects

I want to make a melee Cleric that can hold up well solo, possibly off tank if in a small group. I will probably be the healer in dungeons though.

I might try out a Beastmaster and a Bard as well if I have time. My three favorite types of classes are 1. Jack-of-all-Trades(slightly leaning towards heals), 2. Bard/Buffer that can hold it's own in terms of damage and 3. a pet class with realistic animals.

Well, one of the best things about Rift is the fact that you arent stuck with one class. If you want to play a Ranger then play a ranger. If 10 levels later you decide you would rather be a melee dps class you can switch over to an assassin or nightblade or one of the other rogue classes they havent announced yet. Not only will there be your basic rogue/ranger types, there will also be classes that bridge the gap so you will have tanking rogues, healing mages, and spell hurling warriors. Hopefully once beta starts and/or NDA's get lifted we can find out to what extent they will bridge those gaps.

Personally I have always played a Ranger (Hunter in WoW) so I will try out the Ranger class and whatever other ranged rogue classes (Marksman, etc.) they have available to find either the single class or the combination of classes that suits me.

Indeed, its refreshing to see an mmo where we can achieve a higher level of customization. Too many game's promises something like this, yet they still fall in usual "whats best build for ****" rotine. Hopefully, with this amount of classes we will be able to see some diferrences between players that make their playstyle more unique. Or so I hope =]

you should fed play a shaman then, they look to be amazing as melee healer, although you proably wont be playing it as a healer in groups but for solo it looks to be amazing.

When I played Warhammer Online I played as a Magus who for those who don't know was a range dps and DoTs character. I had a great time teaming up with a Chosen tank. We'd be able to hold agro and demolish baddies fast enough that we never had the need for a healer. With that said I plan on making a Warlock with 31 points and the subsouls being a Chloromancer and then an Archon.
This way I'd be a great teammember for DPS that could also provide off snares and healing. Always seemed to gravitate towards the DPS classes and having the ability to heal would just make the deal so much sweeter.

Honestly some of the healer classes seem interesting. Like a warrior healer would be the paladin, then the rouge healer is the bard, ect. I like how there will hopefully be a variety when it comes to raids and dungeon runs.

I'm looking forward to finding out more about the mage souls that haven't been revealed yet. I got used to blowing stuff up in Vanguard so might as well continue the trend. Am curious to see if the mage class will still be tops for dps in Rift.

The class customization has me more excited for this than I have been for any mmo in a while. It reminds me of a MUD I played back from 98-2004. Had 4 general classes and you could assign the combination of points to get what class you wanted. For Instance 36 was max your specific class could be w/ all points allocated to it, so things like 27 Cleric 21 Warrior 12 Ranger and 9 Mage was a sufficient warrior with very strong healing/debuffing abilities.

I had thought that the sort of customization offered there would never again be available to me, and I've been pleasantly surprised.

It was/is Return of the Shadow. It is a mud based on Tolkien and his works. Set in the 4th Age. Heavily Modified Circlemud. I think a few people still play, but it is far from its prime.

I miss it terribly at times, logging on to 15v15 battles. Gets your adrenaline pumping so hard chasing a wounded opponent. A person had a signature which was fitting to the game "Its not the kill its the thrill of the hunt"

Edit: Needless to say years of mudding helped my reading comprehension and reading speed terribly, and I fully understood in The Matrix how he was looking at lines of code, but he was actually seeing the images that the code was describing.

I've been looking at warlord, partially because i think the team oriented buffs will be really awesome and part because I have yet to see ANYONE that wants to play one.

I would think the main discouraging thing people have for warlords would be that their described weakness is when they are away from allies. Being a poor soloer is very unappealing to most people who single player almost everything that isn't related to a Raid or Dungeon.

Well hopefully i can seduce a few of my friends to the dark side, or light side depending. Honestly though that's why i love the non-solo friendly classes so much. One it makes you really need to now how to play your char to get by and 2. In things like early-mid game PVP and dungeons, that are dominated by the DPS fighters and hunters that solo so well you are a HUGE attribute.......... I just wanna be loved, lol

I played on telnet client for forever. Bright Green Text on a black background. Eventually I evolved to a JavaMudClient that allowed me to set up tons of alias, actions, highlights, subs, etc.

During that time I figured out I could set the colors. Magenta was my default chat color. Red would be incoming damage/tells. Blue outgoing damage, green objects, and yellow would be npcs/pcs.

The funniest thing about my time from mudding would be my keybindings. I would bind bash which was an ability to stun your enemy took like a 3s cast time and stunned for 1.5 seconds or so. I would bind that to v. The actual alias would be bash $targ where I had hotkeys setup so I could quickly change my targets, and now in any game I play I bind my cc abilities to v. I bind my spamming key to c, and it is funny because my most spammed ability in the mud was close door :)

Close door! ahahaha... You really remember that well. I dont think the Mudd I was on had that many options.

I do remember a couple things like memorizing the directions you had to mash to run from a mob... n (north)- n - nw - w - w - w... lol I also remember a classmate of mine playing one called Thunder Dome or Tdome as it was known. He even went on a road trip to meet the guild mates of his which at the time I thought was just craziness.

It was about the time Wolfenstien hit the market and I can remember thinking... Man, I wish they could merge these two games together... Wasn't too many years later EQ came out.

The old school wolfenstein was a great game, I remember sitting down one night a couple years ago and playing it again. Didn't even take me a day to rebeat it.

Haha oh my I loved that game. I have not played it for awhile myself. I love to go back and reply old favorites and think wow this took so long the first time I went through this. I can not believe how easy our old favorites are compared to a lot of what we play now.
Well truthfully I can believe it, but still its fun to remember games from DOS days

I truly loved it. In PvP I did a lot of Feints and Traps by getting hurt then running to where my buddies were hiding inside a building and we'd set the trap. I'd heal as much as possible and the blood thirsty enemy would charge in and realize their blunder and by that time I would spam faster than them.

The game itself was huge and there were several areas of importance that while I didn't know the exact direction ie 13wsdu4e3ne or something like that I knew general areas and so I could just go to where I knew and then go from there. Fortunately it didn't have any death traps so to speak, just super aggressive mobs.

Pvp and Raiding are the two reasons I play games like these. Since I'm going for a main tank build and never usually make alts I will only be a meatshield in pvp, but I'm fine with that. Whatever it takes for my team to win.

Character customization has always been pretty important to me, so to see that there will be some depth to it in this game is quite heartening. As for my first character, Blade Dancer for sure.

@zonjinn

My build I am going for will be pretty much all defensive spells with only aggro generating offensive ones. As such those won't do very much for pvp, which is why my guy really won't be more than a meatshield in it to soak up damage while our dps drops everyone.

but you can just switch over to some pvp souls instead of just being a meatshield

Yes I am aware, but that feature will most likely cost a significant amount of gold in game in order to do it and early on that wouldn't be a wise investment over other stuff.

I like the subtle style in each MMO i generally play so this time also i'll role for a Rogue-Assasin/Blade Dancer/RiftStalker, although i'd like to combine a Rogue- Ranger/Marksman/BladeDancer or a Cleric-Justicar/Inquisitor(melee healer that doesn't fall in close combat. who doesn't want that?)

I'm going for rogue (hunter or marksman)
If my guild chooses the guardians I will go for Mathosian most likely.
If my guild chooses the defiant, I will go for Eth most likely.

All can be different once I am on the character creation screen, I tend to change my mind a lot.
