I know everyone has noticed an alarming trend in games to build their games for the lowest common denominator. We've seen in with WoW, we've seen it with Lotro, and now we are seeing it with Aion. The games start out difficult enough. They are fun, but hard. When you accomplish something in the game you feel that you have actually accomplished something. Getting to 20th level and completing your first dungeon is something to cheer about. But as the game goes on, and they start the patching, the games start to give you everything instead of making you work for anything. Is this going to be the same with Rift? I think it is, but hope it won't be. Has anyone seen this discussed by the developers?

The developer of the raids has stated that he made the bosses very diabolical. So I have high hopes that they will be hard to figure out.

The only things I've seen so far that address this are really the comments from the devs that content will be challenging. At this point I guess that's all we have to go on. I personally haven't seen any statements about the XP curve.

Reading the various Rift Gamer Day instance dungeon articles was awesome. I loved how they talked about the dungeon difficulty requiring a bit of thought and that everything can't be zerged and aoe'd. Bringing CC back to the table is a great thing, and seeing as players can have multiple class builds available at any time means that it shouldn't be hard creating groups where typically X class is needed for CC.

I remember one of the articles said that their premade level 30 characters wiped on level 23ish mobs because they weren't co-ordinated. That is the kind of challenge and content I am most looking for out of Rift. I hope they continue with that design so that players can fail, then have the chance to learn from their mistakes and succeed. That gives you a better feeling than any piece of epic loot ever will.

I know exactly what you mean and I do hope they keep it hard 1 game I commend for keeping things hard is Square god it wasnt until level cap increases that people were beating AV regularly (without exploiting glitches) and CoP missions were hard until they nerfed em and then to add salt to an already raw wound of the people who did it when it was hard they removed all the level caps on it way to appeal to the /fail SE!

People seem to forget - the longer a MMO stays alive, the more resources become available to help those progress through it. There has been a slow decline of difficulty in World of Warcraft, but also a LOT more information is available for every casual/hardcore player to utilize.

(Thottbot, Wowhead, Mmochampion, Elitistjerks, etc.)

Yeah it is part a changing of the times and part dev decisions. Back in the eq days finding sites (like zam!!) was unheard of and everything was distributed within the community. Guilds would beat an encounter and not share strats because they wanted to stay competetive. Though we cannot escape the overwhelming information we have now adays (should we like to) it seems from what i've read that Rift is going to have same very exciting stuff both for dungeons and raids. Having the power to switch roles so fast means they can throw wwwaayyy more at us. I for 1 cant wait

Rift's developers got 150 million from investors to get this game up and running. For a developer team to pull in that kind of support without any other titles to back up their claims they must have some big aces up their sleeves in terms of what they have planned for Rift.
