Worried About ... Dynamic EventsFollow

So the new trend appearing in games today... at least with two of the newer games that aren't out yet, Rift and Guild Wars 2, is dynamic events. Now, I'm all for them. I think this is just what games need now-a-days. Think about it this way. One of the greatest things about the Diablo series, and one of the reasons I kept going back to it year
s after year was that the dungeons were created randomly. That is dynamic in a way.

Rift is taking this a step further and having dynamic rifts open around the world that can and will cause the environment change to reflect these rifts if someone doesn't come along and do something about them.

What I'm worried about is ... are these "fo-dynamic events" or are they real? Do these rifts open at random times in random places around the whole world or are there 100 designated spots that GM's can make open or have them open at randoms times in their code? If they can't appear at every spot in the world, randomly, without a GM telling them to appear, then it's not truly dynamic.

I don't think the Rifts will be caused by GM's. That would be a waste of resources. The Rifts are probably capable of spawning in select areas of the map, if not most areas of the map, and are controlled by a system that is based on a timer or some other game related event.

For example, I highly doubt a Rift will open up inside the town you are questing in, unless of course it has been programmed specifically to do so.

Rifts can be opened by GM's as well as happen randomly. Rifts do not close unless a group defeats it. In order to keep the rifts from overwhelming the map each one of them spawn a different race of monsters so that they fight eachother as well. Rift monsters and the rifts themselves will appear on the minimaps. I believe that is all of the information given thus far on them.

Honestly, I am expecting something very similar to the World of Warcraft's elemental "invasion" event - except with greater consequences if the rifts are left untamed.

See, I don't see this happening at all. The way blizzard did it was awful( opinion, but someone will agree with me), and hopefully rift will not be like this, please! lol

The developers have said that rifts won't destroy anything or become too overwhelming if they aren't dealt with. For example a town won't be taken over or destroyed when you log in the next day. I don't know how they plan on doing this but in WoW if they aren't dealt with people in the cities die.

It's more like Warhammers where the monsters pour out and take over certain areas of land then keep expanding. The longer the rift gate is left open the harder it is to close it.

Listened to podcast 21 today and they mentioned just this... like an entire server of rifts going crazy and no one killing any of the mobs they not only kill creatures in the lands but each other, like different rifts will battle if they pass each other's path. Another thing they said they can and will kill quest gives and merchants as well.. no idea how long for them to come back up but that would suck sometimes when all you want to do is turn in a quest and you have 30 mobs tearing apart the village you need.

How dynamic well read this:

in the recent podcast they did mention this.. they have a server for design testing that people rarely log on.. the invasions had completely taken over the world and were attacking player fortresses etc * major cities* he mentions the entire world of rift looking like the aftermath of a major war.

I think that is dynamic enough ;-)
