Okay so I am curious. What will the purpose of a guild you start or want to join be? I mean will it be a pvp based guild, will it be based around crafting and gathering items? Will it be there just to help people level, will it be a role playing guild? etc etc.

Me personally I enjoy guilds that help new players and everyone else. I love to be part of guilds who will be willing to offer advice to new players, make new players feel welcome, and help each others and others on quest. I love being a part of something worthwhile to the community.

I am not the leader of my guild, I only joined it a few days ago actually. However they have a very similar mindset to my own. They aim to be the best on whatever server we roll on, they aim to be the first at completing content for the server, they plan on being the top of the PvP charts, and they plan on having the best gear possible. Honestly, it's all about having fun, and wheres the fun in being at the bottom right? But that's why I joined this guild, I forsee them going very far and I plan on being with them every step of the way. If you're unlucky enough to roll as a Guardian on our server, I pity you :)

My guild will consist of people from my WoW guild, and we have all known each other since eq. We've always been a pve guild, and can't wait to play this game! I don't know if we're more excited for this or cataclysm. I just don't know!!

Out guild is PvE orientated. We go for raid progression and mastering end content. We have a guild first mentality. Meaning all mats got to the guild and guild crafters make items for the people in guild that are most active. Loot is giving to the members that will make the best use out of it for the guild. (This doesn't mean it all goes to guildleader, not at all. It goes to players that raid the most) This mentality isn't given to every player out there. But if you are able to understand and like that mentality it's a great guild.

PvP orientated guild not aiming for top 5 but trying their best to have some epic lolz in pvp (competitive pvp without nerd ragers) + some casual PvE to experience lore, dungeons, world.

I honestly look at joining a guild for the social aspect first and the game aspect second. If I can find a guild with a bunch of cool people who are actively chatting and having fun it doesn't matter to me if it's crafting, PVE, PVP, or reading harry potter in the guild hall (although the last would be a little odd)

I used to be casual back in the day, now I find it a waste of time. Go big or go home, as they say.

Agreed on the social aspect this is why I like guilds that HELP people, generally they are very chatty and fun to be with as well.

As for the reading HP in guild hall....that would be strange as **** to see but still fun to see too.

What I always look for in a guild is a mature selection of people that are also willing to help out the newer players, arent too demanding of their fellow guild members and most importantly: aren't too serious about it all (it is still just a game) and have a sense of humor.

I have been in several guilds before that were just way too serious, and by that I mean that they just started argueing out of nowhere or started cursing at you, or even worse; just kicked you, when you weren't able to participate in a raid or other guild event.
That is just not cool.
A guild should understand that every single member has another (way more important!) life besides our virtual lifes in mmo's. If they do not accept that, I'm not joining.

Another reason I joined the guild I'm in. I'm one of the youngest people currently in my guild of 80+ members and I am 23. Nothing like getting away from little kid's drama.

PvP all the way for my guild. I'm not the leader but we love to pvp and we will surely join the PVP servers. I love to gank people and open world fights. PvE has its role as well, but pvp is where a game gets me hooked (or not).

Our guild is traditionally PVE/RP side "evil", we dabble in PvP/RP as well, but we've been disappointed in the handling of cross faction communication in the last few games, so PvP involvement has yet to be decided. Since there is technically not a true evil side, we've reviewed the lore and are going Defiant, heavy on Kelari membership. The base guild will be comprised of previous members and we will be opening membership after the first week of launch.

We embrace all aspects of gameplay and will encourage our members to play as they want, as long as they follow the rules. :)

Our guild is currently recruiting skilled players for Defiant PVP.

We were featured on Rift-News: Guild of the Week.

Okay... if we don't roll on a PvP server, we won't get the pleasure. :p That has yet to be seen.
