Old MMOs You Used to PlayFollow

So let's take a trip down memory lane, folks. What other MMOs have you played in the past? Where'd you get your start?

I started with EQ back in 1999 - participated in the beta and got involved with it for a few years. Unfortunately I was on an old dial-up modem so lag was pretty bad, but I made it work. After that, I moved on to DAoC, Anarchy Online, Shadowbane, and more.

How about you?

Planetside, Everquest 2, WoW, Warhammer:Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Aion, Lord of the Rings and DDO:Online.

I thought Planetside was very original and very creative, I think if they redid it today with the graphics now a days and better internet it would be awesome. EQ2 had the best PvE of all of them I think, the PvP was promising but went down hill. Aion had some great graphics but the entire game was just a grind. I mean when they actually tell you to repeat quests up to 100 times...yikes! I thought the PvE of War was boring and somewhat grindish but I loved the keep sieges!

I played EQ back when it first started for a couple years, but it started to get a little too time consuming with school. A couple years later I moved away to college, and I started playing FFXI. Not sure what possessed me to do that, but I did have a wonderful stay- played the game for almost 4 years straight. Towards the end of my college stint, my friend introduced me to Guild Wars and WoW. I like the way Guild wars played, but I could never find mature people to fit in with and my friends already had a guild in WoW, so I opted for that instead.

Five years later, here I am- still playing WoW, waiting for cataclysm with baited breath. Not sure how it's going to go since I was in the beta and I saw how much of a mess it still was towards the end (not to mention my disappointment with the female worgen model). I love testing games, and have tested quite a few. I really love what the Rift community is, and want to do my part to make it a great game. I was really disappointed by both AoC and Aion, so going to try this out and see what I can do.

I started on the same MMO, Everquest. My cousin introduced it to me when I was 12 years old. Also playing on a dial-up modem...I think that's where my anxiety disorder began. I played DAoC for a few years and fell in love with Realm vs Realm. I had never experienced anything so massive and amazing. And then they threw MMLs at us with 200 player raids...just pure insanity and fun. Then I saw Shadowbane where you could play unique Races and was like "aww man this is awesome!" Then I played it for a few weeks and was like "aww man this is terrible!"

I jumped from MMO to MMO to keep myself occupied. Horizons Online was intriguing to me as well with its unique Race selection. Who didn't want to be a dragon? blah blah blah ended up addicted to WoW and the story goes on.

The first MMORPG I played back in high school was Ultima Online. I have some fond moments of that game: like when the town guards glitched and I stood in the town square slaughtering other players with my barbarian sword. My buddies and I played the **** out of that game lol.

The first MMO I played like crazy was FFXI. That game is still a pain but back in 2003 it had so many ridiculous quests and time sinks, plus the fact that the only way to level was in groups, that it was just a surreal experience. I learned so much patience from that game that every MMO I've played after that (WoW, Aion, FFXIV) has been a cake walk in comparison. Looking back I can't believe how addictive it was and I think if it were released today it would flop quick. Made a lot of japanese friends though, so I can't complain.

Also, WoW back in the "vanilla" days was pretty absurd as well. 40 man raids and having to grind resistance sets like crazy to get any raid boss down. Had some crazy time in the 40 man Naxx days, especially Four Horsemen. Oh, how times have changed...

I've played loads of MMOs, but just got serious at some of them:
I started tryng out MU Online for about 2 or 3 months; Silkroad but just til lvl 35, took about 6 months; Lineage 2 in private servers for about a couple of months; Guild Wars was my first serious MMORPG, since the release and still playing some random arenas or HA with some mates; Archlord, since the release and for about 1 year and a half; WoW, since 4 months before TBC and for about 3 years, during these 3 years I had a 6 month break due to try AoC and WAR for about 3 months each one. And fed up of WoW, I decided to play Allods, which seemed to be really like WoW but F2P, and played it till the Fear Of Death patch.

I've also tried out LOTRO, Vanguard, D&DO, Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa and much more :)

Everquest was my first MMO, I was 11 years old I think. I don't know how old you all were when you first got started but being 11 and playing a classic MMO like Everquest was, slightly confusing, but mostly- EPIC. It was the first MMO I had ever experienced and I was amazed at the technology alone. Being online with thousands of others was unheard of for me. I didn't really progress very far though, I was 11 years old and 15 bucks a month was to steep for me at the time. I went on to try out Asheron's Call 1 and 2, played Shadowbane, Earth and Beyond- I've played them all. Not for great lengths of time but it's a hobby to at least give most MMOs a try. I mean really, the list seems endless. EQ2, Guild Wars (if that counts), PotBS, FFXI and XIV, Aion, Warhammer, AoC, LotrO, Fallen Earth, many more, countless Free2Plays- in other words, I've spent way too much money on MMOs. Most of these games I didn't get past the free month though.

Truthfully the only MMO I've ever found myself fully engaged in was/is World of Warcraft. I haven't played for a few months but I fully intend on going back when the expansion drops next month.

Hmm.. I think I was maybe.. 13 or 14 when I tried my first MMO? My dad let me play games when a lot younger, but my mom got rather upset and constantly tried to thwart his attempts to introduce me to the gaming world being a little girl playing Wolfenstein 3D and all lol. I think that was the first serious game I played, and I loved it.

I tried vanguard as well, but I wasn't very impressed. The UI kind of confused me a little, and it was tedious for me to try and figure out what my classes primary stats were, making picking out gear from quest rewards or random drops tedious.

I think I posted this else where but i cant find it so DOUBLEPOST!

Started on EQ was young and naive and fell head over heals for that cruel cruel ***** of a game. But I loved every minute of it. After a lot of everquesting I moved on to play short stints on wow and then lotro, had a good run on WAR but that got boring after a while. Then darkfall happened and that was such a good time, the most innovative game i've ever seen given a shot and I am glad that adventurine sunk their funds into it hopefully they make more than 5 bucks in the long run. So here we are today getting ready to jump into a brand new adventure, I cant wait I hope it can live up to the first time I played EQ and I have a feeling it will.

Started with FFXI in 2004 and played that for about 2.5 years. Then switched to Warhammer for a year, there wasn't enough endgame stuff to keep me occupied in that one. I switched to Aion and played for a little over a year and then got burned out.

First ever MMO was EQ back in 2000. Then I moved over to Star Wars Galaxies and when Sony ruined that I moved over to WoW until that also was ruined. Then I roamed the online universe for some time and played some guild wars, lord of the rings, warhammer, original EQ emulators, I also played a great deal of Darkfall with some friends for while. And then a month or so ago I found out about Rift in Game Informer magazine haha. and here I am on this forum :D

Before I started playing MMO's I was a real console gamer / collector, but when Final Fantasy XI was released in 2003 I just had to buy it. Ever since I am wasting my spare time playing MMO's ;)

Final Fantasy XI - My fist MMO love. Realy liked the lore and the class system. Still have my original account active and play every now and then. Although I have more hours played in WoW, I still consider FFXI as the best MMO I ever played.

World of Warcraft - After having some FFXI LS members and friends disappearing when they where going to try WoW for the weekend I decided to try it out myself. At first I started playing late at night after I played FFXI. Slowly I started playing more WoW then FFXI. I still have my account active and play regularly.

Guild Wars - Just played this for a bit when I got bored of WoW, but it didn't feel like a real MMO. Just not my kind of game.

Vanguard - I was looking forward for this game since it was in Alpha and was happy to be joining the Beta. I do think this is the MMO with the best concept, unfortunately it didn't turn out as intended. I kept my account for a long time and played every now and then. But decided to cancel last year as the worlds where just too empty, sometimes you could play for 3-4 hours without even running into an other player.

Warhammer - Have mixed feeling about this game. I liked the PQ en RvR zones, but there just wasn't enough freedom in the game to keep me interested for a long time.

Aion - Played it for some time, but lost interest. Don't know why, it just happened.

Final Fantasy XIV - As a FF fanboy I just needed to buy this. As for now I am disappointed in the current state of the game. I do have faith that SE will turn it in a good game, but doubt it will be as good as FFXI. My account is still active since we just got a 3rd moth of free play, not sure if I keep it active when subscription starts.

Started with EQ back in late '99. Joined a few guilds..settled upon Red Sky. Great bunch of people. Left EQ due to graduating college and getting a real job. =-)

Beta'd EQ2 and played for a couple of years..just couldn't keep interested.

Played Vanguard for a bit as well shortly after release..meh.

Beta'd SWG and really wanted to be Bounty Hunter..played it for a while 'til it got rediculous.

Beta'd and played PlanetSide some..Team Fortress and CounterStrike were better.

Anyways, looking forward to Rift!

Seems like EQ classic was the starting point for most of our mmoing =) should make for a great player base in Rift. After surviving that loot starved grindfest of a game this should seem like a **** candy store.

Wow... This is going to be a long list. Lets see: Meridian 59, UO, DAoC, WoW, CoH/CoV, Horizons/Istaria, SWG, LotRO, WoT, Mechwarrior Online, EQ, EQ2, STO, CO, RoM, Aion, and Warhammer Online. I'm sure I missed a few. One I miss the most would have to be DAoC. Hated what the Devs did to my primary class (Warden) with nerf after nerf, and left for other pastures.

It all started with the FFXI Beta, it was my first MMO and I was hooked like you wouldn't believe. Had an ongoing love-hate relationship with the game for many, many years.

After shaking myself free from FFXI I tried WOW but quickly grew bored of it all. Since that time I've given most MMO releases a try and I currently dip in and out FFXIV.

In all likelihood it has to do with my age and real life responsibilities but I can't endure punitive grindy games anymore and like to focus more on the social aspects of an MMO.

All that being said, I do like a challenge. I hope Rift can provide me with what I'm looking for.

Mines pretty short aswell.

EQ2 since Jan 2006! lol

Before that I was really into Runescape and Maplestory cause all my friends played them, not sure if they count as MMOs though.

I've also tried the Trial for pretty much any MMO I can find. Out of all of them Eve, DDO and Planetside are the only ones other than EQ2 that I would have paid for. Though since I already had an EQ2 sub, I wasnt willing to pay for any other game.

Hmmmm....I played Asheron's Call on dial-up back in the day. They had the coolest magic using system that was a lot like a type of crafting.
Then I played WoW pretty regularly for several years, adding Burning Crusade and Lich King, then played it sporadically, and have now stopped and don't plan to buy Cataclysm.
I've pretty consistently played DDO since it went f2p. It's great fun and rather unique.
Other games I've either bought and played out the 30 included days of play or played a trial or am dabbling in an "endless trial" or I occasionally log in to take advantage of their f2p-ness:
Age of Conan
Champions Online
LotRO
Runes of Magic
Warhammer Online
Everquest 2
Vindictus
Guild Wars
...I think that's it.

Played Everquest for a while, after that i tried a bunch of newer games, didn't stick with any of them until i tried RYL, played that until Wow released and played wow for like 5 years with some long breaks here and there, lead a guild through all vanillia, tbc and wrath content until i quit for good earlier this year. Also tried Aion when it released, it was fun and pretty good but nothing special so i didnt stick with it.
Im hoping Rift will be as good as i think.

Like majority of the people i started my MMO career with Everquest back in the days, tho never got in to it. After that tried pretty much every possible f2p games out there until Guild Wars and WoW. I tried couple other "big" MMOs like AoC, WAR and Aion but they bore me after a while. Now days its just GW and WoW which have kept me busy and i still enjoy playing them.

Hmm, actually my very first MMO was Earth and Beyond, but I was really too young to be playing an MMO, with no money on my own to pay the subscription, hahaha ;) WoW was my second MMO, and the one I play still.

Over the last two years or so, I've tried out most of those 'other' MMOs like LOTRO, Aion, WAR, you name it - I've played it. But not for long, really none of those game stuck, as the one I played the most of those was WAR. I still have it installed, and check back from time to time to see if that weird lag is gone. It's still not!

Lets see...
I started off with WoW then went to Guild wars...back to WoW a while later, moved to Age of Conan, back to WoW again, moved to warhammer, moved to Aion, moved to vindictus, moved back to WoW. Majority of my experience has been with WoW and with Cataclysm around the corner probably gonna end up there again till Rift comes out.

I started off with WAR, played LotRO, and WOW. Hoping Rift will deliver everything it says it will. It is going to be amazing if it does.
