I looked and didn't see a post so I figured I'd create one for us rogues to talk about the class and what we like/dislike and hope to see.

In every MMO I've played I always make a ranger first. I just love the class and shooting stuff from far away, somtimes it can be a pain if you are in a tight space and don't have much room but other than that its always been fun. In EQ2 each rogue got a handful of poisons to use. Each poison did something different, some would cause dmg right away, others would cause dmg over time, some would remove certain stats and others would reduce movement speed and such. You could have three different poison types active at once so for instance a dmg poison, a stat reduction poison and tha movement speed reduction poison.

As a ranger in EQ2 you pretty much wanted to do as much dmg as possible as fast as possible. You always had to have the speed reduction poison because as soon as someone got to you you were dead. Most range attacks wouldn't work if your target was to close or if you were moving so you had to keep them at bay to do dmg to them. So I'm wondering how rangers will be in Rift.

What are your guys/gals thoughts on rangers or just rogues in general? What are you looking forward to the most and what are you the most hesitent about?

I'm looking forward to testing out a Ranger/Assassin combination to see if the poisons Assassins get apply to the Ranger bow as well. This is also one of my favorite classes to roll, as they usually seem to have the best burst damage as well as distance ;)

The Soul for the Rogue Calling I'm most interested in will be Bard. As far as pure Damage dealer I think assassin with the focus on poisons will be nice, or the Caster Rogue will be something neat, almost has a battle mage feel.

Oh, the Riftstalker? That looks interesting, but I'd love to know more about it.

I played a ranger from the start in EQ2, and personally I didn't like the feel of it. So yes I eventually betrayed to assassin... blasphemous I know! But I'd like to see the ranger class go back to its roots: communion with nature. That is why I am hopeful about Rift's Rangers reading this:

Source

Quote:
Strengths

An expert woodsman and archer, the Ranger excels at striking from range, while their animal companion harries the opponent in close combat.

Weaknesses

Without an animal companion, a Ranger is but a simple archer, and while still quite deadly, can no longer mount a strong defense in close combat.

How great would it be to truly feel like a "Ranger" rather than "ranged dps." Give rangers abilities that embrace their tree-hugging, survivalist side, I say. I worry from the above quote that rangers may become a weak pet class, but then I look back to "Beastlords" from EQ and I get excited again. I know what these old school devs are capable of!

Don't get your hopes too high about ranger pets, they are more about stopping mobs from getting to you, not dealing big damage. Unfortunatly these rangers look like they will play more like wow hunters than the glorious eq snare and bow kiters of old. However the tracking ability will be SO key in pvp so i think thats where ill be, ranger mixed with assasin for stealth should be fun, for pve ill probly do ranger and bard for grp buffs and dps,
