VIP Key InsanityFollow

I am amazed at the insanity for VIP keys for this game. It's been low buzz on it's own and only going by word of mouth, and external articles and the people are going nuts for a VIP key. Earlier I tried to get a key from twitter for VIP and they were gone in less than 60 seconds. 8 keys, poof. This is crazy for a game that's not even out yet! :)

PS. Yes.. this is yet another place I am active just to try to win a VIP key! LOL

It's pretty smart, on their part from a hype and business perspective.

One of the points made in the Art of Seduction (largely a silly book, but interesting psychologically) is if you keep something from someone, it only makes them want it more. And if you turn someone down or seem to slight them, they want to prove even more they're worthy.

Not exactly revolutionary, but still interesting how the way they've handled beta. Imo less like most companies have, and more like a ladies man trying to get into all of our pants. ;)

And it's working... just look at all the eager beavers!

What I find interesting... is that they have so much demand for the VIP keys and the last beta didn't dampen it at all. There must be at least a decent product out there so far, or the word of mouth would have spread.

Twitter keys seem to get used up in under 10 seconds most of the time. There is a lot of speculation on the official forums about how many of those keys are being grabbed by twitter bots for sale on eBay.

so im new to this forums but anyways earlier tonight i saw 3 codes given away on twitter all 3 of which were posted less then 5 seconds and not a single one was i able to use

I read somewhere people are using scripts to snatch the keys up, so usually you only have a little time to snag one... and even then usually it's not enough =[

I suggested that they break it up in some human only readable form to allow people to get them and never have a bot get them by just copy/paste it. I mean the key has to be used 5 times to make it invalid, that would mean a new TRION account each time it's used right? Seems alot of effort for a beta chance.

That would definitely be a good idea...though I don't think Trion really cares =\. If they did, I'm sure they would have done that a long time ago, perhaps?

well lets put it this way 3 beta codes added tonight were gone in less then 5 seconds... i know because i was one of the unfortunate people to get duped by the twitter bots

Well it would certainly help, or at least make it in some way or form more human interaction required than "here's a code C&P" boom you have an account and off to ebay you go. =D

Then again even if it wasn't being hounded by bots, there is still the likely fact that 3,000 other people are are after a key valid for 5 spots. That's not exactly a lot of wiggle room hehe.

The part that makes me sad is the fact that people are paying some guy who has caused them the grief and frustration of not getting a VIP key $40 so they can get in. Any how GL to you all hope I get one and I hope you do too!

Yeah, there have already been TONS of codes for sale on Ebay, spotted by members of the RIFT forums. It sucks so bad. Couldn't figure out how to report one I found though so I just left it alone. I'd rather get a key legitimately than buy it... cheaters...

Its not for a chance as VIP keys are pretty much guaranteed a spot in the beta unless they ***** up. To my knowledge only 1 person got a VIP key and missed out on beta.

I think it's just an issue with how they are doing them. They make them to easy to bot, that's all. I see posts all the time of people who tried 10 seconds after they were posted and they were all gone. I mean, that has to be used in an account right? So are they making new accounts that fast, or are they making an account ahead of time?

New accounts. You can make multiple accounts with Trion. One tactic is to create dozens of accounts (just takes an email confirmation) and then the regular 'chance at beta' keys lend far more of a chance to get in. Or, you make an account and email and then sell access to both once the vip key is applied.

Far better to have people verify their username and have Trion apply the code directly, but takes much more time and resources. And they have better things to do, like banning people from the forums!

I've beta tested games since Daoc and I've never seen the fervor Rift has created in acquiring those elusive beta keys. Willy Wonka golden ticket anyone? I'd buy a few candy bars :)

game seems very neat. im glad to see it has such a rapidly expanding community of interested would-be players. hopefully a large initial server population will result in sustained popularity. more money = more potential (definitely not guaranteed) for cool new content from Trion.

heres to hoping Rift doesnt suck like so many other recent MMOs . . .

speaking of which, Key Me! :D

The hype on this game has gone up a lot lately. Word out of the first Beta was positive and that has gone a long way to move things along I think. Plus, a lot of people are Jones for a new game that is truly different and doesnt just say it is different with a little window dressing.

Me too. I check facebook everyday, checking messages from people, and every day I see the same kind of messages: I want VIP, please give me a VIP. Sometimes people offer community pass, but they don't want it, they want VIP.

Fact of the matter is folks, that after all the bugs in all the games, and all the developers we felt did not listen, this game has shown tremendous promise from the start. VIP keys were a dime a dozen before BETA 1, and now when people got a taste of how awesome this game is, you have to fight tooth and nail to get em lol.

The VIP key stuff has gotten out of control. Rift has gone from zero to hero in a hurry due to word of mouth. My fear is that hype is getting too crazy and expectations along with it.

That said, Trion made a risky move and it's paying off. They did not heavily market this game prior to beta 1. They played it pretty close to the vest and seemingly stayed humble and are now letting the Alpha / Beta hype machine do the talking. It's working.

Hype is always a double-edged sword. On the one hand you get massive exposure for your game, and large numbers of people willing to purchase it right out of the gate. But this can backfire easily, sense the rumor-mill will be running overtime and people's expectations will start to reach unrealistic heights.

Which is why I never buy into hype. Rift looks like it will be legitimately fun, and I look forward to seeing how well some of the new ideas are implemented, but I'm not going to start expecting them to reach the stars.

Does anyone know if Rift has announced what they are going to do about these twitter bots taking all the keys? Not exactly good publicity when they are essentially just being sold off.

Last tweet I saw said they won't be doing the "Next 5 people to redeem this key" thing anymore.

I've been trying to get a key myself. I had some on Twitter and within 38 seconds @ 1:30am EDT, they were gone. Sadly, I logged in at the 37 second mark of it being posted. **** one second! >.< :D

I'm hoping to win one from Zam or get lucky on twitter(:

I find it funny that you are the only person to mention that you don't need to be a bot to be 1 in 5 in 3000. Along with everybody claiming they got to the post in 5 seconds there are lets even say 200 people doing the same thing in 4 and 100 doing it in 3 etc.

Edit: Fail Quoting lol.

Twitter VIP keys are super hard to get, I attempted to get three of them and did the copy/paste within thirty seconds of them being posted and they were gone.

Of course it doesn't help that they just now are saying some browsers have been having trouble taking the codes and some people who may have done it fast enough missed out because their browser wasn't working properly on the site.

Never seen so much hype over a beta access, especially for a game that up until lately has been relatively quiet and passed along as word of mouth.

Really hoping the people who get full access make full use of the beta and that Trion uses the beta to fix things, the game looks gorgeous but there are clearly some things that need tweaked and as of right now if all the beta keys are getting sold or bought and people are just trying to "play for free" then they won't get much valuable feedback from my experience.

It's actually kind of a testament to the effectiveness of this campaign....two days ago I hadn't even heard a whisper about this game until I saw one of the "WWWWWWWWOHCRAPWWWWWW" ads on the Escapist...two days later here I am, participating in contests, obsessively refreshing twitter and trying my damnedest to get into beta. Well played, Trion, well played.

Definitely a waste of time trying to get one from Twitter with all the bots snatching them up within seconds. I had the sms phone alerts set up and even with a 10-15 second response time for trying to apply them to my account I spent all week trying (and even spam refreshing Twitter on and off) and couldn't get one.

Summed it up very nicely. I've been following the game since it was called Heroes of Telara, and when I got invited to cb1 I didn't realise there would be this whole VIP key hoohah. Smart move on their part, and yet it has sort of put me off (even though I keep trying for the key, lol).

After my experience with vanguard I have to say the more hype the better. Although I can't see Rift possibly being close to Vanguard from a developers standpoint, I can see a lot of people dropping from the game when they become disappointed in the soul system not living up to their expectations of having the full abilities of all classes at once.

I think, speaking for those of us who were lucky to play the first closed BETA weekend, that the product so far is well above average. The first open BETA weekend went very smooth. The game played well, so well that at times I actually forgot it was still only the BETA. In fact, I found myself getting so wrapped up in the game that I would have to make a conscious effort to remember to look for bugs and report them. Over the 3 day weekend, I probably turned in about 10 or so issues. However, they were very minor ranging from such things as "missing head on character view..the body was there but his head/face was missing" to simple things such as "npc name halos not moving properly and stacking together making it impossible to read names, etc". There were several others but all relatively minor. What I found most impressive is that after reporting the bugs, they all seem to have been fixed by the end of the weekend. In addition, I think most would agree that if you are looking for truly awesome graphics, the detail of the mobs and NPCS, etc as well as the environments are incredible. So far, from what I have seen of Rift, this game is going to be awesome!
#51 Dec 15 2010 at 10:46 AM Rating: Decent
Well That's definitely good to hear from the first beta event. Unfortunately I feel like beta at that stage will just make me want it released even more quickly! I'm still hoping I get a key for this weekend so I get a chance to see for myself.
