Does anyone know if raiding will be the only way to get the best gear. I hope not. Don't want a wow gear grind.

That was actually a question I had myself.

As I have not gotten to actually play yet.

The promo videos have mentioned rewards from rift events, but I don't know the details.

Most likely will be that way, although I hope they adapt the new age PvP for gear strategy, but not Aion's "You can also PvE for gear, and it's actually easier and less frustrating to do than to PvP for PvP gear. We are geniuses."

Rift into opponent's zone, kill, get pvp points/tokens/medals, redeem them for PvP gear. Do raid events, get PvE points, redeem them for PvE gear. Everyone at the raid is happy, not just the lucky guy that got that drop. Am I right?

I'm going to speculate that gear breakdown is going to be similar to WoW at endgame with raid gear > group dungeon gear > solo quest gear. The big questions are where and how do crafted gear, PvP gear and Rift/Planar gear fit into that model.

Speaking of gear, how many gear "sets" are we going to have to juggle at endgame? Will we just have 1 set of "best" gear or are we going to have to have a bunch of different gear sets?

I'm expecting you will want to carry a couple of different sets of gear at endgame. I'm guessing you might have up to 4 gear sets, up to 1 gear set for each of your different "roles" (i.e., PvP gear set vs. Tank gear set vs. Healing gear set vs. etc.). I'm hoping we don't have to have a separate elemental resist gear set. While I like the idea of elemental resist gear it tends to get annoying to have to hold on to a resist gear set in practice...

I'm hoping they keep the gear sets simple, because it could easily spiral out of control given the modular nature of the class system.

Agreed. I would rather not have just 1 "best" choice for all situations, but I don't want to have a different gear set for every fight. 2 to 4 sets of gear would be ideal for me.

I actually imagine gear sets would be based on your souls. That is especially important for clerics that can have ranged magic souls and melee souls, which means they might need robe set and plate set to strengthen their chosen souls. If there are sockets involved though, soul based gear + different sockets for different situations...you might end up with a bunch of gear sets.
