I didn't pay attention to starting stats for the race either. If they do have differences they are minor.
Every race has a bonus to a specific resistance (+20 IIRC) which I'm going to guess is going to be minor in the long run.
Every race has one passive bonus (i.e., -2% damage taken, +2% to all stats, +3% healing received, etc.).
Every race has one 5 minute cooldown that actually can really effect gameplay. These typically provide some major boost for 5 to 20 seconds with effects ranging from a rune-like effect which absorbs damage or semi-major self heal to some very nice damage boosts.
