I have read a lot about Rift both good and bad, and it sometimes strikes me as crazy the things people post. It seems a lot of people are not asking themselves two simple questions:
What are you looking for in an MMO?
Why do you think Rift might have what you want?
I think if people really think about the first question and don't just go with "I want to have fun" or "I want to rule!" then I think we can find a great diversity of answers.
Originally, when UO came out in 1998, it was intended to be the sand box for "you and a few thousand of your closest friends." Since then, there have been a lot of games and countless posts on what an MMO should be and oh so much flaming.
Personally, I would like to see it get back to the sand box, with challenging games where death is a royal ***** and things that are player made are highly desired and difficult to produce either because of the skill up time, or the rarity of the materials needed. Food needs to be part of the mix where it helps characters and player made food is the best.
Having these things in game I feel creates cooperation among players which is the key to success and fun in an MMO in my opinion. PvP forces one type of cooperation because in all out PvP worlds being alone is being dead.
From what I have read today, I think the challenge is there in Rift, I am worried about crfating and the death system. So I will be watching, but still not sure if it is the game for me. And if its not and its the game for you, congratulations and good luck, no flaming needed. (Oh, and if WoW is the game for you, congratulations, and why are you reading this when you should be off playing your game?)
