any idea on where to get the type of coin they are asking for to buy recipes for crafting?

if this coin is what I think it is, they are given to you via Daily Quests/Craft quest you can fine (make so many of X and maybe a few of Y).
I found one in Sanctum the other day, it had me making boots :3
When I checked my toon's currency I saw I had Crafting Coins (or something that you knew was from crafting).

Yeah, the Artisan mark, or whatever it's called is granted from the Daily workorder quests. There is a different Daily for each tier of materials so you can be doing quite a few at once if you have the materials.

For example, as an Outfitter, your Daily may have you make 3 pairs of Burlap Shoes. When you unlock recipes for Cloth equipment, you will have a daily available to make 5 Cloth Shoes (or something) as well as the Burlap Shoes one. Then 5 Wool Shoes, as well as the previous two.

Each tier gives you more Artisan marks, and is a pretty good way to make you use up your old materials that you don't want to just get rid of.

I noticed that once my weaponsmith got to a higher level (around 100), the first daily workorder was no longer available to me. I guess they have a level range to them. Not a big deal, as the lowest level dailies offer the smallest amount of tokens.

Yes, who does not love dailies :)

With those marks you can buy recipes. You can also buy recipes through faction reputation, although I found them a bit expensive (some were a few plat per recipe)

Yes these do upgrade from Crafting skill levels (not character level). You can actually get advanced fast enough in the trade skill that your turn-in will be in a hard to reach place. Defiant go freemarch, granite falls, scarwood(?), etc. Granite falls will be hard to reach before getting into the lower 20's level wise. If you have the funds for portals you can bum rush your way to the next area's portal and use it for your daily turn in. The coin rewards get higher also so this is actually a good thing to do if are getting the coin bought recipies.

While on this subject - Tip For The Day:

All the non gathering crafts have a Salvage option which is available right from the start of the crafting skill. A problem arises due to the fact that the recipes for the salvaged goods are quite a ways into the skill upgrades.

What seems to occur is almost universal. Crafters see these salvaged materials as vendor trash and subsequently they vendor them.

I made this mistake with my first crafter and from talking to others crafting – it is apparently an error everyone makes.

Bank them until they are needed. - enjoy...
