Bard is a buffing class in Rift. I can't find the thread right now but there was one on the official forums where the devs had created a chart that shows what each soul was intended for and Bard was the only one that was flagged as support. The devs described 'support' along the lines of, "I make everyone else more effective at what they do enough to warrant a spot in the party."

While other classes are seen as support (warlord in the warrior calling comes to mind), Bard is the only one the devs gave that designation. Bards do get some minor abilities that do damage but the majority of their abilities are centered around buffing themselves and their group or debuffing mobs. Already the solution to all things difficult is shaping up to be "throw more bards at it."

cool that's pretty much what i was hoping for i loved playing brd in FFXI and it was mainly a support only class "until brd party's started then we were pullers" but the buffing was good fun.

thanks for the info ill keep looking for the forum post you mentioned

thanks good link for all class info, seems brd may be a little behind as far as them releasing info or people finding/posting it. makes for a good time figuring out stuff as you go.

It covers all the skills, PvE, PvP, Solo, as well as talent trees and the such.

As for my personal opinion. I love the Bard. Incredible support class. Been a fan of Bards since EQ1 :)

Bards, Buff, Debuff, raid heal, group heal, do dps.....bards are very powerful if played correctly. Bards have damage based heals and do hot heals

I haven't played Bard yet, but everything I've seen supports what everyone here says. Although, a few Bards have stolen a mob or two from me. So maybe puller isn't too far off. LOL

AMG no. People who are not tanks who pull make me a sad panda.

Really? I'm so used to it, it didn't faze me until now.

Granted, I was part of FFXI, when it used THF and NIN as pullers. Or whomever had a ranged weapon on them. LOL

Yeah, but FFXI was different. Groups would usually pick a spot to camp at, and 1 party member would go out, grab a mob and bring it back to the group. That style of fighting doesn't really exist in RIFT. Especially in dungeons where the entire party moves through the zone, clearing out 1 pack of mobs at a time. If you're not the tank and you pull; you're only making things harder for the healer, and the tank (who usually has to fight for agro on multiple targets)... or the whole group if you die and they're left with 1 less person to clear the mobs.

Good to know. Thanks! :)

I'm enjoying the feel and pre-ordered. Now I want to level Bard, since I did RDM on XI and preferred the pre-Aht Urghan method. That is...actually doing more than refresh/cure/haste.

I had a lot of fun with my bard (got him to 27 so far). Cadence (your main combo building skill) heals for as much damage as it deals. From there you decide to either use a debuff coda, healing coda, or a damage coda. I believe there's a single targe damage, an AoE damage, AoE heal, and 2 AoE debuffs to choose from. On top of that, you'll need to refresh your motifs every 30 seconds.

The Bard's rotation will keep you pretty busy in combat. If you're not refreshing buffs or debuffs, you're probably trying to catch up on getting heals out to your group. I seldom found myself building combo points with no urgent need to spend them. And when that does happen, you just dump them into DPS.

Ya, as Atreidestw pointed out, you're usually pulling groups of mobs in Rift, as opposed to FFXI where you're pulling one mob. It's not hard for a tank to pull one mob off another player, but when the pull involves 3-5 mobs it can get messy. And since the tank is ultimately responsible for controlling the situation after the pull, it's usually easiest to just let the tank do the pulling. I ran one dungeon in each of the last two beta events and in each of those groups I had one player who insisted that they were going to pull despite my repeated requests not to do so. And in both groups each of those players badly botched at least one attempt. In the second group, after about my third request for the offending individual to stop, myself and the healer just let them die to the mobs they pulled and then I picked them up and we carried on. If I'm the party leader and someone else pulls, I ask them not to do it. If they do it again I tell them not to do it. If they do it a third time I remove them.
