Hi everyone,

let me introduce myself, im Steve, im in the UK, im 30 years old and i have played MMO's for years, pretty much since EQ, through to SWG to MxO, EvE, WoW of course and most recently i started out with DCUO.

Recently though i have lost my way, i think maybe im getting to old for MMO gaming.. let me explain that.

I had rift on pre-order, i was excited for it.. im not WoW's biggest fan (ok, im on the other side of the fan fence) but i was looking forward to it, i read a preview or 3 and the constant "warcraft clone" statement gave me cold feat, so i cancelled the pre-order....

Another few months past, and i got exited again, so i preorderd... again! however more and more comments were coming through.. "its just like wow" a friend told me, all be it with more polish. so i got cold feat again and cancelled the pre-order.

as DCUO hit release i got a bee in my bonnet and decided to download it, i dont know why, but i did... wow that one was plagued with issues and reminded me that very few MMOs are that great on there release day... the need a bit of ironing before they get things together.

so i resigned myself to giving rift a few months to settle down... hence this post...

Fact is, i want it, i have friends already playing the "head start" everyone telling me how good the game is, and what im missing out on.. by the time i get in now most will have had a 7 day head start... i may be 30, im still as thick as when i was 15 lol

* totally pointless post i know, but wanted to introduce myself to the community :) see you (fingers crossed) friday night!

From 1 Chimp to another... :D

Actually, many will only have a 1 day start...tons and tons of folks do not pre-order. Also, you will be on even footing with everyone who joins today...and way ahead of every one that joins tommorow and the rest of days. Many other folks pre-ordered but could not get into game, or bumped into some technical issues and queue times....or only play on weekends.

I joined my last MMO a few months after release (as I found out on release day that I needed a stronger video card to play it, after downloading the client....and I needed to save up a bit). Years later, I found myself running the largest guild on my server, and depending on the expansion and time put in...(arguably) one of the stronger characters in my chosen class. Some of the "best/strongest" characters at various times of the games' history joined years after release...hopped into a heavy and successful raid guilds...and the rest is history (I'm referring directly to stat/level/gear progression, best/strongest can be subjective, depending on your opinions).

It doesn't matter when you join, but joining early in a game's lifespan is usually a good idea...more folks in your (and all) level ranges, active markets for crafters, lots of excitement and most on the same learning curves etc.

Elinda, random question - do you have a (cleric?) by the same name who is a Guardian? I ran into one in a warfront last night. Pretty sure she was healing, which made my saboteur very sad (I just can't out-DPS a healer before getting focused by someone else and getting crushed, haha).

And welcome, chimp. I'm curious, why did you not try the Beta? There were several phases out there and plenty of keys by the later ones; it should have told you right away if Rift was a keeper or not. Either way, it's recommended, highly, by myself and many others Smiley: grin

No, I don't have the game yet. I played beta only the last weekend and was only able to get the name Elinda on one server (I tried three). I was kind of surprised as it's not really very common...it didn't used to be anyways. Elinda is the usual name for my Ranger types.

Knowing the name's not available on the Alla guild server, I might change my mind about the whole Rift thing. Or maybe not. Hah!

Locke is on the admin server, so it might still be available on Lotham where us cool kids are!

Not to mention that warfronts are multi-server, so that said "Elinda" might not actually be on their server :P.

I'm still in WoW... just got an alt to 85 and need to work on gearing up. Or not, I may just work on capping profs and rep for the time being.

I downloaded the CE version of Rift tho, and am very glad I got that because of the mount. This is one large world and getting to the rifts when they open would be a chore without that mount. We had a world invasion event last nite and we had this huge mob of people just swarming from rift to rift, a friend of mine who got the regular version complained that he was arriving at each when it was almost over. Plus, if you go thru higher level areas, mobs have to be dealt with if you're on foot and trailing behind.

My mage is lvl 14, and has some nice parting gifts from the rifts that I'll be able to open at 15 and 20. So far...having a blast. Yes, it's like WoW, but different enough (and improved upon enough) to be very cool.

You know they did pretty well for an MMO when people, instead of regretting purchasing the game at launch, are instead second-guessing their decision to hold off for a few months. =D

This sums it up pretty nicely. They basically took the best parts from WoW added public groups and giant free for all raids (as early as level 10). If you enjoyed WoW at any point, you'll almost surely like Rift. I was hesitant too until I got into the open Beta. "It's like WoW, but better."

Most MMOs aren't worth it at the beginning, Rift is. It's what WoW should have become, but chose to stay old and stale. Levelling is extremely fast, there were level 50s by day 4. I'm taking the slow road and levelling two characters that are already 30-ish and doing crafting/gathering. Your not going to be far behind your friends, especially if you stick to one character and grind quests, you could catch them in a week.
