I recently bought rift and it should be arriving soon, But before I begin playing I would like to know if there is any particular calling or class etc that is excessively overplayed, as I tend to try and avoid playing the same thing as 'Everyone else' as it were...

If anyone could shed some light on this I would appreciate it greatly :)

Its not really an issue in this game since each class can be played numerous ways. There are a lot of rogues, but rogues are also the class with the most options imo.

More than ever, the answer is to roll what you want.

I see a mix, nothing in particular is overplayed. Really though there aren't that many classes, but with all the souls to choose from, there is a huge variety in playing styles. I haven't seen anything that pops out in particular like there was on WoW. Ret Pallys and Assasin Rogues for example. There seems to be all manner of different kinds of players and with the ability to switch roles you aren't stuck with one style. Over time, who knows. Its still pretty new and people are still experimenting.

At least in warfronts I tend to see a ton more clerics and rogues than warriors and mages. Mages seem very squishy for warfronts, and warriors need to get in close to do damage so they get focused, so that's probably why.

But it's not too huge a difference. In a normal Black Garden with ten players, 6-7 will be rogues/clerics, and 3-4 will be mages/warriors.

I see bards, tons and tons of bards. Second would likely be melee clerics.

I mostly hunt rifts and world pvp people (rp-pvp server) as a reference.

Now that I have a bard soul I can understand why there's so many bards. It's beyond easy to stand in a rift and strum, strum, finisher, strum strum, finisher, refresh motifs and get TONS of credit. It's undeniably helpful to have someone aoe healing everyone, but the effort involved seems fairly low.
Always check for black-on-black text.

callings all in all are fairly spread out but with the insanity that s warrior a lot more people roll them and stick with them

This is all just a fanboy civil war. Some are hurt that SE gave them such a crap game, the others are hurt that anyone would call it crap.
