I'm a died in the wool FF player ever since the release of the original NES FF game. You can call me a homer/fanboy, whatever label you want to place. I love the FF series and have never dabbled in any other mmorg, although I did play DragonQuest when I was younger, but it was just a phase I was going through.

So recently the FF servers were offline and I grew bored and wanted to experiment with this new game. I mean all my friends and family all told me to stay away because it was like WoW, but my friend and I picked up Rift and decided to give it a whirl.

All the time we kept saying, it was only going to be for a time, and we would go back to 14 when the servers were back up. I mean how nice will it be to have 100 anima and all our guardian's favor, and be back with our linkshell and so on and so forth.

Well after playing Rift for a week, I have feelings for Rift, and now I'm kinda confused. I don't want to tell my friends because they may think I'm a sell-out. I still consider myself very much FF and will never leave it. I actually like 14 very much. But at the same time I don't want to cancel my Rift account. I'd like to see it sometimes when nothing is going on in my Linkshell. I'd like to log in to it now and do some quests, and maybe ride a mount. You know jump arond here and there.

Is this wrong to feel this way? How can you serve 2 MMORG masters because you will love the one and hate the other? What will my FF friends and family think if I still decide to play Rift on occasion?

Dear Confused Elvaan,

No, those feelings of confusion are perfectly normal in your situation. You've been raised in a very strict household - on the Final Fantasy series since the very beginning. However, a lot of players in your situation simply never realized the world available to them outside of the FF dogma (which I personally loved myself, until the Great Merger. Curses, Enix!!). For example, if you had played some of the Elder Scrolls games prior to a Final Fantasy game, you likely would have found the Japanese genre far too constricting, linear, and slow. If you had played World of Warcraft prior to an online FF, you likely would not have had cause to try the newest FF game. But we need to think of your current love triangle.

What you need to do from now on is decide for yourself what you want. Two-timing isn't an ideal solution, but neither lover will mind. In fact, that might be just what you need! You've already put your money into FFXIV, and it's currently without subscription costs. You bought Rift and have a few more weeks to decide if you want to renew your subscription. Right now you're in the perfect place to take time and analyze your feelings, you dirty two-timer.

My advice is this: when you get to your computer, ask yourself "What would I rather do?" Then do it. You might feel like you're letting your other partner down, but like a creepy stalker, they'll always be there to take your back.

Best of luck - Stereotypical bullsh*tting advice columnist (in Rift) -

I think you should subsitute anything you said about "FF" with "my girlfriend." Rift could be substituted with "the new girl at school."
Date both? Can you afford both? Will one be just too demanding with your time? Can you keep from mentioning one's name when you're with the other?
Think hard about this one. Your mmo-life depends on it.

...you can tell I'm not real busy today.

Thank you for the advise Locke. Come this Saturday night, I'm going to sit down in front of my computer with an ice cold milk and maybe a few girl scout cookies, and contemplate which icon to double click on.

Question: If I choose to play Rift, do I put my gamepad and lock it in my drawer? If I leave it out, my Rift experience might be lessened because I will feel the gamepad looking at me.

Also Should I be playing Lionel Ritchie's "Hello" for inspiration during these confusing times?

Let it stare....it's always more fun when someone is watching....

Also, "Every Breath You Take" by The Police seems appropriate as a song choice given my above statement.

Otherwise, "It's Not You" by Halestorm would be a good bet as well.

I was in a similar position back when Rift first came out. I tried to juggle both, but when compared to the new guy in town, my first love seemed lackluster. Finally I had to be fair to him and let him go. I haven't logged into FFXIV in weeks, and I feel better because of it.

I know FFXIV is free now, but at some point I'll have to pay, and I knew that making the decision would be harder with a more developed FFXIV character at stake. Well...as developed as a FFXIV character can get, I mean.

As they say, a man cannot ride two horses. And by ride I mean have *** with. And by horses I mean horses.

What were we talking about?

No but seriously, I started on XIV too, and I even though I might get back to it after I quit WoW. But then Rift came out. I'm sort of on the fence now.

On one hand, Rift is way better made than FFXIV. Lots of polish, lots to do, tried and true systems. Problem is, I feel like I've been playing rift for years already because of how close the mechanics are to WoW. FFXIV is, of course, nothing like WoW.

I don't care what people say, Rift works a lot like WoW, from rogues using combo points in groups of 5 to do finishers to having tradeskills that you learn from a trainer that rank in groups of 75, to how old wow you had to learn new versions of skills. The pace of combat, how quests work, mounts work, etc etc etc. If you took WoW, put an upgraded graphics card and new art, and came up with a new story, you'd have Rift.

And honestly, the actual *rift* thing is really boring to me now. Been there, done that in the first zone. Now its just disruptive of when I'm actually getting in to the story told through kill X number of Y quests (and the stories are actually pretty good). Oh look, the whole zone is being invaded again, just like an hour ago, and now you fight rifts or log off. I'm starting to choose to log off instead.

I know I'm complaining. These are my complaints. There's plenty good too, I mean I'm still playing it so don't think this is all I think.

Oh also, since I'm complaining I might as well get it all out huh. I like the complexity of the class trees, but with how easy it is to change between them, and how there's no long-term growth in the trees (you get points, but you can go to your trainer and choose new trees at will to put them in with little loss) it really does feel like there is only 4 classes. Just 4 with lots and lots of skills.

One is complete and full of fun.

The other will be complete *someday* and perhaps will even be fun at that point in time.

So basically, you can have the fully matured woman who wants to, and knows how to, please you right now this minute (RIFT); or you can have the still-forming teeny bopper who keeps getting her chewing gum caught in your zipper(FFXIV).

Your call.
