OK, so I created a mage to run with my friends, but they ended up passing me by and catching up to my rogue (who originally was going to be the character I play on my own without having to worry about waiting for friends) so now instead of focusing my mage on healing, I'm going to switch it over and try to get a decent build for solo play. My first question is which pet is better (and which complimenting tree is better) for leveling up with, Necro or Elemental? I know Elementalist pets fall off around lvl 30 unless you specialize, but lets just say I'm looking for a build to get me to 30 and not to end game. At level 12, my skeleton can't hardly take any damage and it would be nice if I didn't have to worry about him dying on same level mobs so easily. If I go Necro, I'd go Warlock. If I go elemental, I'd probably go pyromancer.

My other question is should I invest a little into Chloromancer (in either case) for the healing or go with something else, say Archon or Dominator? Although I haven't looked much into it, I think either of these two would compliment an elemental or necro build well, but lack self healing I believe.

Edit: To answer part of my own question, an elementalist pet is much better for soloing as it can tank for you in many early situations. With that said, I still can't decide on what to spec next to Elementalist because Chloromancer gives my pet and me so much more survivability, but at a cost of firepower (since you have to invest 10 points into it to make it useful, and early on 10 points is a lot.) I think for now, I'm going to go Chloromancer/Elementalist/Pyromancer with either 10 points in Chloromancer and the rest in Pyromancer or 10 in chloromancer and the rest in Elementalist, I'll probably mess around with both. Still any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Well, I may not be the average player, but I went with Elementalist/Pyro/Archon. But the problem with that is if you main ele and secondary archon, you don't get much survivability. So recently I dropped Archon and went Ele/Pyro/Chloro. You get way better survivability, especially when you get swarmed.

I would go at least 32 points in Ele so you can get in combat mana regen, but if you aren't playing past 30 don't worry about it. If you do plan on going at least a little into ele, go 21 points so you can get the greater elemental. The aoe taunt is really good if you know how to manage pets. The minimum number of points I would go into chloro is 8 so you can get insta bloom. Honestly, unless you plan to heal groups, that should be all you need. If you are worried about survivability as long as you pick up Improved Quicken Elements, you should be golden. The only time it hasn't healed my pet back up to 100% from 20% is when I had my pet tank the last boss of a major rift.

The only reason I am pyro is so I can get an instant to put at the end of one of my casts.

I don't know too much about pyro or necro tbh, but I hope this info helped you. :)

Thanks for the reply!

I had a lot of fun today playing my mage, went from lvl 13-17, collected all my souls, and did a few rifts (some solo!) and I think i'm determined to go Ele/Chloro for sure, as for the third one I'm not really sure if I'll go Pyro or what cause I'm not sure what I want in the build (other than super solo survivability). Right now (because I have not respecced at all) I still have Warlock and I really like having DoT's but I still feel like I could be doing more damage. My rock pet is awesome and does a great job of keeping hate, so I'm happy about that (unlike the skelle who couldn't keep hate and died quickly) and I can keep him healed with my 10 point investment in Chloro even through 4 or 5 mobs.

I think my plan is going to be 10 or so points in Chloro (so that I can heal for group quests also) and then invest most if not all the other points into ele.

Oh and it's not that I don't plan on taking this character up past 30, it's just that I noticed a lot of people talk about end game builds when people ask about builds and not actual leveling builds and since I know nothing about mages (well I do now) I wanted to make sure I specified I was talking about early on.

What level are you currently, Jeremyrush? I'm wondering how an elemental main does during end game in terms of farming and early group content.

People don't talk about leveling builds because leveling in the game is pretty easy. The only requirement is to know what you like, really. For example, I like crowd control and support and don't like pets, so I leveled as primarily Dominator/Archon on my mage. I will say flat out that it's not an optimal build. But I had fun machine-gunning spell hasted Pillaging Stones (they actually hurt quite a bit...) and locking down things that would flatten me otherwise. Leveling is probably the best time to experiment with what you like, especially with the cheaper soul reset costs at lower levels.

Currently I am level 39, almost 40. I have very little problem facing a lot of enemies, and when I do it is usually because I wasn't watching my pets health enough. Though, you can always just use Fast Summon to bring him back. Actually, now that I think about it, the only real flaw in elementals soloing ability is the lack of a heal. Well, you could always sacrifice your pet then fast summon back for 25% health, but I think going a bit into chloro is the better way.

I don't plan to do groups with Ele, since this spec is geared toward soloing stuff instead of high damage. I plan on going 51 Archon for the utility. But I will keep my ele spec for questing or dailies and stuff like that.

Also, according to a thread on the official fourms, Necrolock is top single target DPS (assuming they haven't changed much since 1.1 came out) with SC/Ele being top on AoE. If you have a 51 Archon and a group with several pets, SC/ele pulls ahead on single target too. So, yeah. Thread is here if you want to check it out.
