Been playing this game like a maniac the past day or so.. Im up to level 19. I gotta say, this is way more fun than any MMO I've played before it. Somehow Trion delivered the game Square Enix promised with FFXIV and also managed to have the classic fun and solid mechanics that made WoW great as well. Frankly, I can hunt rifts all day long with a good pack of people outside Meridia and be happier than a pig in *bleep*.

I don't know what games Trion has made before this, but dang, this game comes out the gate buttery! Thanks for giving me a really awesome MMO to sink my teeth into.

I dont think Trion the company has made any games before this. They do have some genre veterans on their staff though.

Yep, this is Trion's first game.

Though with their Dynamic World Toolset, I'm sure they'll make more after this

This. They do have two more upcoming games, though. One is a Sci-Fi game set to be released alongside a new TV series on the Syfy channel. From what I read, it seems that what happens in the game will affect the course of the show, and vice-versa.

Oh, I didnt know this was their freshman effort.. Color me more impressed. My roommates talked me into trying this game. TBH, I kinda puttered out of WoW before reaching 85 with any of my toons and FFXIV.. I dont think Ive touched it in months. I was expecting "more of the same" MMO fare.. I thought I was burnt out on the genre.

This game has so much going on it's intense! Loving it so far, and looking forward to more!

Okay, that is an incredibly cool idea. Too bad I don't like Sci-Fi. :)

Honestly best part about this game is they took they very bland mmorpg template and just shook it the **** up.

What seems to have done it for me is there is a forced world pvp on the pvp servers. After almost every single invasion in any of the high level zones is a royal rumble of epic proportions.

Man glad I rolled on a PvP server; can't wait till I hit the higher levels. It's been pretty tame so far only a few world rumbles here and there but I'm only 37.

I don't really like the warfronts, they're kind of missing the whole element of surprise kind of thing.

Alpha Trion originally created Optimus Prime, which in my mind is far superior to Rift.

I heard a rumor that a good number of Blizz devs defected to Trion to help create Rift, don't know if it's true but it would make sense as a ton of the problems I had with WoW seem to have been addressed in Rift, but for that matter Trion devs could have just trolled the WoW forums for complaints so they didn't make the same mistakes.

I'm literally willing to bet a million dollars on the fact they did this. Case in point, aoe looting.

GG Trion prevails over Blizzard once again.

Can someone please explain this experience to me? I really wanted to like Rift, and I did for a few days.. but I could never say it was more fun than any MMO I've played. Did I miss something?

I am not being sarcastic, I really want to know.

More fun = dynamic Zones, better graphics (yes I play for the pretty too).

More fun than any other MMO = I won't argue either way, I love Rift, and I used to love WoW, and STILL love Eve Online.

Better game play = Soul system, dynamic Zones, Trion devs sense of humor all over the game, and come on I ride a Horny Gorilla for a mount!!

Assuming you gave it a fair number of levels, I don't think you necessarily missed anything. I think they've done a really great job with this game, but I also think it really depends on what you're looking for. I've heard a fair number of people say they checked it out and decided it wasn't different enough from what they were currently playing to justify starting over. Or that they're just simply having more fun with something else. Most people I see or hear saying they love it point to the class system (which really is the niftiest of the nifty) and the dynamic content. I love it for both those things, plus frankly, Rift was in the right place at the right time for me. I was very open to change.

I don't think it's like baseball where you're a jerk if you prefer the Yankees. Find out which game is yours, and play that. :)

The only thing that I think Trion could really improve on, is the graphics optimization. The graphics aren't bad, but the optimization itself is quite poor. It'd be nice to see some improvements in this area, so that game can run a bit more smoothly. The graphics are, by no means, next-gen, and still using DX9. There's no reason it should tax a new system like it does.

You should have seen it in the early closed beta. They're using WAR's system, which back when WAR launched was amazingly inefficient.

It improved like.. 4th or 5th wave closed beta I think. It's a hundred times faster than it used to be :/

Alright I see what you're saying. I guess it's just little things about it that bother me. In WoW I have a few 85s but I played my hunter most (mage more now). I wanted to play a rogue and have an assassin type soul combo for pvp and a hunter type for PvE. When I saw the ugly pets and found out you couldn't tame animals, I was really disappointed. The fact that it takes minutes to kill someone with an assassin didn't help either. I think there were just a few main things I was expecting to still have if I transfered over to Rift and they just weren't there. The environments are beautiful though and for a new mmo it's amazing how complete it is.

For my wife [also a hunter player in WoW], the pets were all the same, ugly and everything was purple [She leveled to level 15 or so and didn't make it out of Freemarch]. She also hates Fantasy that bombards you with "nonsense" names and words and couldn't figure out a "hook" or motivation for the game; she ended up not having any reason to care about anything in the game and cancelled before the free month ended.

To OP - Welcome to the game and glad you are enjoying it.

To the others talking about why - For me it was about a lot of little things. I love WoW, I also love other games and consoles, so I'm not any specific Fanboi or anything, but for Rift it is something fresh and new and its more that just a shiny coat of paint. There are a lot of similarities but there are also many improvements or advancements over the current generation of MMOs if you dig a little deeper (especially in your Settings).

Little things like:

  • AOE Looting
  • Auto Larger Bag Transfers
  • Cast on Targets Target (setting)
  • UI Customization and Memory (without heavy addons)
  • Seemless Public Grouping (for rifts/foothold/strongholds etc)
  • Depth and variety of Souls (too many games are shying away from this and dumbing things down)
  • Multiple ways of advancing and earning currency for upgrades. So figure out what you like and enjoy!
  • The Rifts themselves. You'd think after doing so many one would get bored but I don't and in new zones there are new types so it just continues to be fun (for me at least).
  • In-Game Community seems more approachable/friendlier (forums in general, not so much)
  • Story and new IP is pretty interesting (if you get into that aspect of it)

  • Sure I also have some gripes but overall I think this is a great game especially how its coming out of the gates so "complete". Thank you Trion!

    Later.

Man, I've been watching too many SC2 replays. My initial thought when I read the thread's title was that someone left.

    Good game, though, yeah.

Also, AOE looting is the bomb. Whenever I go from Rift to WoW, I keep forgetting to loot all the mobs in a cluster of corpses because of it. Smiley: frown
