This is probably going to come across as a stupid question but I will ask it anyways.

Why are Controllers <Gamepads> not supported by the vast majority of MMOs. I know it can be done <Square-Enix>. This is the 1 thing that prevents me from trying and posiibly enjoying non Final Fantasy MMOs. I am 64 years old and moving around a keyboard is slow and painful for me. Any legitimate answer would be appreciated.

Controllers in general aren't really all that popular with the PC gamer.

SE offers controller support because everything they do is with consoles in mind. And their insistence on building their UI around controller support is a huge part of why the FFXIV UI was summarily slammed by the community as clunky trash.

Controllers and keyboard/mouse don't share UI setups very well. In order to justify offering controller support, an MMO developer would be almost compelled to offer a distinct, separate setups. It's a fair amount of time and resources to implement something that the community doesn't even usually ask for.

I'm no spring chicken myself but I find a keyboard far easier than a console controller.

And watching someone try and type with a PS3 controller is painful.

MMOs as a genre are not just an interaction between you and the computer - which controllers cope with quite well - but an interaction with other people. That requires typing.

The other point of course is that unless you wanted to get into the manual gymnastics of multiple button combos the number of abilities available in any MMO I've played would have you scrolling the bar to choose one. And that would get you or someone else dead quite fast. Purists will tell you that keybinds are the fastest most accurate way to play and just because I'm not able to play that way doesn't mean they are wrong.

If you are dead set against keyboards there are some devices from people like Logitech and Razer that give you a gamepad with large numbers of buttons under your hand. Personally I've never got the hang of them either but like I say, I'm old Smiley: smile

For games designed to be pc exclusive, which most MMORPGs are, gamepad and controller users are in the significant minority. Unfortunately this means it's good business sense to ignore this demographic most of the time.

The vast majority of pc gamers neither want nor own a pc gamepad.
