You spent all that time and money to put out a lovely, polished game, and then when it came time for the voice acting, you went into the break room, grabbed the closest guy with half a burrito in his mouth, and had him read his lines off a card without benefit of rehearsal?

Obviously this is not a real QQ, I actually think it's hysterical. It's so bad one has to wonder if they're doing it intentionally to be funny. My personal favorite is the "hag" in Gloamwood. Didn't even have an actual woman on hand to play the part. Or perhaps it was an homage to Shakespeare.

Edit: I can't imagine this is the first time this has been brought up, so I apologize if it's a tired topic among you peeps who've been around since beta. I only noticed it recently.

My favorite is the pterodactyl yell that my Kelari male warrior does on the character select screen.

Howard Dean would approve

Meh, you don't really play an MMO for the stellar voice acting.

Unless you're playing Old Republic apparently, it seems like that's about all it has going for it.

It could be worse..they could've had enough budget left for the voice acting talents of Peewee Herman.

TBH...during invasions I'm usually laughing my *** off at the toilet-gurgling mangled sounds coming from the voices of the leaders. Hilariously lame.
I think they should have found an Ahnold sound-alike to say stuff like "we'll be bahhk!"

I'm thinking it's because they don't want to pay a lot of money for it.

According to the buzz around EQ2, SAG has a lot of say in things like voice acting for video games. And these actors, even bad, never-heard-of actors get paid royalties for these things. This is one of the reasons EQ2 dropped so much of its voice acting, it just got too costly.

I don't know if that's why it's so lame in this game or not, but that would be my guess.

Yeah, and there is a guy's NPC voice that is used many times that is a "wanna be" Yoda and I laugh many times when I hear that sound set. I don't know that its intentional but you'd imagine someone recording sound would say, "Hmmmm, good take but can we try it again and make it a little less Yoda this time?"

Still I don't mind, Rift is a great game *despite* most of its voice acting. ;-)

Later.

I actually thought it was mostly just digs at other games. For example, during a fire invasion Cinderon (i think thats his name) sounds like a Krick and Ick parody verbally jousting with what is clearly Jaina Proodmore with a hangover. I thought it was funny. The bad guy didn't sound at all sinister (then again, neither did Krick and Ick) and it's getting to where all female voices are so generic that they may as well just cut up old Liv Tyler tapes and use those. Why use actual actors at all?

Still, it could be worse.

Look at the voice credits in the book...most of the voice actors are devs I met during Gamer Day, when I had the tour of Trion's building, if that helps paint a picture :P

Quite a few players from EQ2 volunteered to do some voice overs there. The response was that it's not the game that gets to decide, it's still SAG. So either way, no matter who's doing it, if there's any kind of "acting" going on, SAG is getting their paws on some money.

SAG ( Screen Actors Guild ) doesn't have as much power as you think. SAG is like any other union. It only controls work done by those who are members of said union.

Sure, you want a George Clooney or the guy who voiced Bender, SAG has all the power.

You hire some Joe Schmoe who happens to be an A++ drama school student, SAG can't say crap.

It'd be nice if some of the voice acting for major characters was nicer. People like Asha or something.

But, the invasion bosses? The hammyness and terrible voice acting make them all the better.

Sometimes I think it would be funny if you could make your own addon audio packs for MMOs, similar to what you used to be able to do with old games like Doom. So instead of talking to a dwarf and having him say, "Strike whenever ya feel like it!" when you close the dialogue pain, he says, "Moo."

That would be awesome.

I guess u can say that voice acting and graphics are not going to be the best in mmo games. Most people don't play it for that reason. I do have to say the game play in Rift is excellent and the graphics are pretty well polished.

I have to say when I first started playing I started as a Defiant, and I had to listen to Frederic the Betrayer's voice... I now mute the sound for the entire 1-6 level area.
