At this point, I am wholeheartedly convinced that there is literally not a single -ing thing that Trion could do that THOSE people wouldn't take as undeniable proof that RIFT IS DIEING!!!~!

Trion's SVP confirmed in the last week or so that they've crossed over the 1mil subscriber mark. (He used the word "customer" as I recall, and some will assume the worst based on his choice of words, but I don't care.) There will always be those who look at any criticism of the game as an indication that it's going to suddenly die out. I remember how I used to think when I was 11 years old, too.

At Allakhazam/EQ's 10th anniversary someone used a wayback machine and found a post on the EQ Allakhazam forums heralding the sure-fire death of EQ. It was ~6 months after launch :)

I think the MMO community is now jaded enough that Rift will experience slow-but-steady growth and keep it for at least five years.

There, my official prediction.

It's always baffled me why people seem to be hellbent on declaring their game dead.

If you're having fun, you don't want it to die.. if you're not having fun, why are you still playing?

This has always confused the **** out of me

Isn't that just ragequitters? Or people trying to be dramatic on the forums and "force" the developers to follow their whim on some pet issue of theirs?

A lot of it is people just fearmongering for attention, yes. They hope that threats of utter failure will motivate the developers to take them seriously. People have been telling Trion that Rift is dying and Rift will fail since headstart. Yet despite all the threats and prophecies of doom, the objective numbers show respectable growth.

What a lot of people either don't realize and/or refuse to accept is that the developers don't need the players to tell them what is going on with their game. The developer has a much better knowledge of how many people are playing and how many people have stopped playing/cancelled subs. They also have a much better knowledge of how many new players are joining the game, how many trial accounts are being converted to full accounts, etc.

It's the same thing with raiding/PvP. It's always nice to have extra eyes and ears on the ground to point the devs in the direction of something they may have overlooked, but nothing is changed based on a forum post. If it's something that sounds like a reasonable complaint, or is something that seems like its getting a lot of attention, the first thing the devs are going to do is compare what players are saying to the objective metrics. If they line up, they know a change may be in order. If what the forum whiners are saying doesn't match with what the objective numbers are saying, they know it's not that big of a deal.

Scott Hartsman commented before launch that he recognized the importance of player feedback in shaping the game and allowing it to improve, but he also knew that you don't adjust the game based on who screams the loudest. Right now there is a 141 page thread in the PvP and Warfront forums started by some guy who resents the fact that assassins can escape from a losing fight by using Slip Away. It's a pretty tragic read, albeit entertaining in a sick and twisted sort of way. And you can rest assured that the small handful of people who agree with the OP of that thread think that because it has so many pages the devs are going to change Slip Away.

Teehee. i give it a month after the thread dies down (if it ever does -.-) before one of the crybabies starts a new thread demanding to know why Slip Away hasn't changed yet. "100+ pages of a thread saying change it and you still haven't changed it amfg why do you ignore us I'm cancelling your game is dying you fail at life Trion haetz u all!!"

I don't believe that nonsense either. Every time I visit the official forums there are at least 3 new threads about Rift going F2P, cash shop, dieing, etc. Yet when I log in, the place is more populated that I ever remember FFXI being, and that place maxed at about 500k subs.

Rift is fine, and the only ones who don't think so are a handful of folks who just want to troll. They should check out some other recently released titles if they want a good example of how to practically seal your fate as a failure.

I called it when Rift launched. There are people in the MMORPG genre who do not think Rift has a place in it. There master plan was have SWToR release Spring 2011 <--yes 2011 and have GWuild Wars 2 release Q4 of 2011 <---yes q4 of 2011, but like always those dates keep getting pushed further and further back

Rift came out of nowhere with 2 months of hype a dev who is literally putting Blizzard to shame on their dev speed. I am not sure if Trion has spoiled people or whatever, but you are smoking crack if you think Bioware, ArenaNET, or any dev anytime soon will put out content like this at this speed anytime soon.

Blizzard updates what..once every 4-6 months...Guild Wars 5-7 months!??!Bioware has not done a MMO in god knows how many years and their updates have to be voiced over and even Blizzard said that stuff adds ridiculous time to make and get right.

When you get on those games and see a cash shop from day 1...your request for x-server LFG go ignored....your request for addons go ignored...the fan sites requesting data base access go ignored....hot fixes take days and not hours....content takes several months and not a single month...OP classes are kept OP until the next big patch which is months away. People are just seriously delusional right now in my view.

There are people right this second who expect SWToR to have to updates as fast as Rift. I do not see how it is actually possible. Trion is answering forum request in under a week if people have no noticed.

Bug post have hot fixes in literally days...Blizzard took years to fix the need/greed system and Trion did it in a week. People are just spoiled right now and I am personally going to laugh.
