I can't even imagine trying to develop a game in an environment like that. When all you ever hear is people whining incessantly about everything you do (or don't do), it'd really wear on me after a while.
The really crazy thing is that prior to this change, all we saw in the PvP forums was relentless rage and QQ about the power gap between rank 6+ players and players rank 4 and below.
Now that people have had a couple of days to let the impact of the valor change sink in, that segment of the lynch mob has largely settled down. They only had to have it explained to them a couple dozen times exactly what was going on, but hey...public schools. What can ya do?
It's the raiders who ground out the ranks and favor for the synergy crystals that are right jammed up at present, and in a way I empathize with their plight. I learned long ago in WoW that at the end of the day, it didn't bloody well matter how good the honor epics were in PvE...I never enjoyed battlegrounds enough to make the grind worthwhile. I learned that lesson. I think some others might benefit from learning it too. There's absolutely no benefit to setting yourself down the path of a very substantial grind that you don't enjoy because it's an MMO, and that means that carrot at the end of that stick could change at the drop of a hat.
I think future iterations on PvP gear will carry vengeance across the board as pretty much a given at this point. A big part of the issue, as has been mentioned, is that they released HK quality gear from warfronts and people could largely outgear HK even before they ran HK. So for the next tier of raids, when rank 9/10 is added, at least it will be a little more clear to raiders that outgearing raid content through PvP avenues isn't worth it.
