Trion plans to launch a gaming platform for both developers and players that will feature triple-A MMOs. CEO Lars Buttler says it will "literally host the future of premium games." Details here: http://rift.zam.com/story.html?story=27947

Sounds like an ambitious project. Basically, they want it to be a portal that features a ton of quality MMOs and not, as Buttler puts it, "thousands, if not tens of thousands, of Korean and Chinese crap games."

Pretty strong words for a press release o.O

Yet somehow, it reminds me of a little dream within a dream from back in the day called PlayOnline...

Though I suppose it's too early to lump Trion in the same category as SE...

...now that is a thought that's going to fester.

It will be kind of like Steam in that it will be a portal that gives you access to a bunch of games. I'd say a similar example is the big list of titles that are available from SOE or Perfect World Entertainment. Basically, Trion will help a bunch of developers get their games out to players.

Imagine you log into Red Door and you can play Rift (fantasy MMO), End of Nations (RTS), Defiance (shooter), and a bunch of other quality games from other developers. I think Trion's main goal is to give players access to a bunch of premium games in one place.

Buttler's quote was from an interview. The press release was much more tame. :)

So do you pay one monthly fee for all of these games? Or is it just a place to download them?

I don't believe they've provided details on payment options yet, but I doubt it's one monthly fee for all games (unless they decide to implement something like the SOE All Access pass). Since End of Nations will be free-to-play, I'm sure other titles will be free as well.

The Red Door platform isn't scheduled to launch until around spring 2012, so more details will be coming! :) Red Door's actually just the codename, so we honestly don't even know what it will really be called yet.

I believe it will be most comparable to Blizzard's Battle.Net service. Whether it will be a downloaded application (Steam, Origin) or through a browser remains a mystery.

In practice, it has many advantages:
Consolidated Account Support
Universal Account Name & Password
Centralized Patches, Updates
